We have brewed several unique, hoppy beers for National Hop Day (February 28). The Hop Goddess has one type of malt (pilsner) and one type of hop (Saaz). This light bodied beer shows off the flowery flavor of this eloquent, quintessential European hop. A lot of guys don’t like to drink light colored, subtle, balanced beers but Real Men drink HopGoddess Ale! O.G. 1047 (N.) / 1052 (M.) I.B.U. 39

On tap into pint, Nashville brewpub. I might be a local loyalist. It seems I see more in Boscos beers than other raters. Maybe it’s that Boscos doesn’t benefit from hype; if Boscos were Kuhnhenn, maybe they’d get some cred (not that Kuhnhenn doesn’t deserve their hype; I’m a groupie of theirs, too). As it is, I think Boscos is underrated (at least beers from this Nashville location; I don’t know about the others). HopGoddess is a wonderful beer. Hazy dark yellow in the glass like a wheat beer with a foamy white head that is very durable and diminishes only after about half an hour. Lacing, however, is thin, sudsy and reluctant, and racing is meager, patchy and quick. Spicy sweet and salty aroma; mostly like cinnamon Altoids, but also subtly flowery and reminiscent of soup crackers. Prickly carbonation, fatty malts and a late malted milky sweetness. The prickliness of the carbonation accentuates the full hop flavor of the Goddess. They must pour tons of Saaz in this; I’ve never thought of noble hops as bitter, but this takes them to that level. The hops open up on the finish be be somewhat apple-ish in flavor, powdered-sugar sweet, and yet very dry and earthy. The earthy sawdust and peppery notes waft up to the top and back of the mouth after the swallow, seeming to float above the tounge and affect the whole inner mouth. The beer is expansive in its simplicity, yet not boring and one-dimensional. The brewer(s) here really know how to create a finish.

Bottle conditioned. Pours rich copper with thick white head. Heavy sediment but little lacing. Nice sweet floral aroma. Sweet yet strong hop flavor with very little malt. Nice crisp, clean finish. A great IPA. So great we had to have two.

On tap Memphis. I’m a sucker for those Saaz, especially used to its perfum-y best in a Pils. Hazy gold pour with lively carbonation, with a nice easy to drink palate. Well hopped and another reason I’m rapidly changing my mind and becoming a homer for Boscos.

Pale yellow, pure white foam. Aroma is clean light malt, light hops. Very nice noble hop florals, spicy, herbal grassy flavors, clean pils malt. Solid.

On tap at the brewpub in Nashville. This didn’t strike me as a pilsner - I thought of it as a hoppy wheat ale. Pours a slightly hazy yellowish straw color with a small white head. Aroma is mildly hoppy with lemon and grain. Light but pleasant. Flavor is wheaty with grainy pale malt and mild citrusy hops. Lemon and floral notes. Somewhat light-bodied. Very crisp and refreshing. This is a good summer beer for sure. I’d drink it with DUIing around a yard on a lawnmower.

Nashville. Translucent, muted and paling yellow in color with a concrete ice sheet that’s been showed on. Subtle hop cleanliness promulgates buttery croissants in the aromatic portion. Some standing laundry water and wet dog turn it slightly south. Touch of herbaceous flavor is highlighted by green grassy hop bitters. A little creamy, a little dry and clean on the palate. Comes off as a pilsner first and foremost, driving home herbal bread heels and thyme in the end.

on tap-pours a white head and pale yellow color. Aroma is grain, mild citrus/grass. Taste is grain, then overtaken by grass/spice hops.

Tap; Boscos: very light pilsner appearance. Very light lacing. Very drinkable and a solid hop presence. Probably a niche beer for those wanting to try a hoppy yet accessible brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tasted on 6/15/11 on draft at Boscos Nashville. Pours hazy yellow with an average white head that slowly recedes to spotty lace. Nose is bitter resin hops and creamy orange rind, like a bittersweet Dreamsicle. Flavor is bitter with a hint of hay malt and orange rind. Body is light with average but stinging carb and a long bitter citrus finish.

(On tap) Memphis. Slightly hazy pilsener golden with a small, creamy, off-white head. Vaguely hoppy nose. Light-bodied dominated by the pilsener malt. Marked, hoppy finish from the Saazer. 280306
