teebradford (45), Senatobia, Mississippi, USA Jul 2, 2008 I really like this. Had it on tap in Midtown. Very fresh. Looks like a stout. Chocolaty. I can’t really compare it to anything. Unique. KDorgan12 (162), Memphis, Tennessee, USA Feb 21, 2008 Cask-Memphis. I think the cask conditioning really brought this beer to light. Deliciously complex and a nose full of hops, and it doesn’t get any fresher. SpringsLicker (1846), Tennessee, USA Dec 7, 2007 Pours clear dark brown with a thin head.
Aroma of malt and toast.
Sweet start with a dry hop bitterness for the palate.
Moderate body.
arjoseph (558), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 10, 2007 On cask, Nashville brewpub. The board listed today’s cask as Zwickel English IPA, which would have been a new beer entry, but I guess I’ll have to settle for this. Settling is the wrong word, since this is actually quite wonderful. An opaque murky brown beer in the glass with a large, creamy head that reminds me of Guiness head. The aroma is as murky as the beer, with muddy earthy notes and some dry dirty hops coming up through the creamy malty overlay. Agitating the beer brings out some chocolate powder smell which lingers in the nose after setting the beer down. Creamy in the mouth with very soft carbonation, this also is a little watery, so that it is pretty refreshing for still being solidly medium bodied. Very creamy coating of the mouth in the finish with a meringue type sweetness, while the tongue experiences dry roastiness that is not incredibly defined, but a nice counterpoint to the sweet coating elsewhere. As it warms, some off herbal and mealy green flavors enter into the beginning of the finish, which detracts from the experience. Overall, it doesn’t have quite the nuttiness, bitterness or chocolate that makes a good porter (whether Baltic or English-style), but the mouthfeel of this makes it totally worth it. Without the qualities of the cask, it would be inferior, but since I’m drinking the cask version, I’m going to rate it as if it’s always like this. kp (6300), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2007 Name: Ed’s Porter
