On tap, Nashville brewpub. Smitty is right: this isn’t sweet or milky enough to fit the style; it’s like a dry stout mixed with a brown ale. I have a feeling that each of those hypothetical component beers would have been pretty good, too, as this has a lot going on: nice, stiff body; spicy, horseradish-ish bitterness in a dusty finish; some fruit-cake sweetness in the middle; nutty aftertaste. Unfortunately, they don’t work so well together. You can tell from the smell: lactose is obvious, but doesn’t impart a milky quality, and the horseradish is also in there to prickle the nose. This is muddled, but still not bad for all that.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Butters (3013) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - JAN 2, 2009
Draft at Hillsboro. Clear reddish brown pour with no head. Alcohol burning on the nose. Lots of alcohol warming on the finish. Flavors are reminiscent of a sweet stout, but I dont really pick up any lactose. Medium body and almost flat.

OG 1.068, IBU 30.
The aroma was roasty with some light estery chocolate and some light espresso character. A bit of sweet caramel was notable. The beer arrived brownish heading to black, but extremely translucent with ZERO head. The flavor contained a nice roast with chocolate and espresso coffee coupled to a nice caramel character. The finish was dry with lasting light chocolate into the aftertaste. The body was medium of just a bit bigger with an extremely low level of carbonation and no creaminess. An ok beer, no head, and no carbonation.

At tap at the brewpub. A jet black pour wiht no head and good frilly lace. A nose of malt chocolate and a hint of coffee. A very pornounced flavor of chocolate which is very close to rich chocolate milk that slides to a very pleasant bitter. Mouthfeel is a little fizzy but aside from that the palate is full. A very good offering. The carbonation took a little away for me.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 illinismitty (2269) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - JUL 13, 2007
Draft at Nashville. Pours a deep brown with a creamy beige head. Medium light bodied with a thin texture. Aroma of brown sugar, nuts, and roast. Initial flavor of caramel, nuts, and cheap chocolate. Mid palate has notes of lactose and subtle dark roast, joined by a sharp spicy bitterness. Finish is dry. Not bad, but this lacks the characteristics of a good milk stout. Some of the flavors do not seem to be cohesive either. This tastes more like a dry stout blended with a brown ale. This is not milky or sweet enough in my opinion.

Way too sweet for my tastes. Overly milky for what I prefer but will try again with more open mind.
