Brewed by Chuck Skypeck of Boscos Nashville Brewing Co., Nashville, TN.

Initially brewed as part of a nationwide celebration of the 300th anniversary of Ben Franklin’s birth. In spite of the fact that Benjamin Franklin is constantly given credit for the quote “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy,” this line does not appear anywhere in Ben’s writing. But I’m certain he felt this way about his favorite beverage. Brewed with corn and molasses, two common brewing ingredients in colonial times, Poor Richards Ale is a modern interpretation of a beer Ben might have drank in one of his favorite taverns.

Draft sample at Boscos Squared in Memphis. Pours a clear amber color with almost no head whatsoever, just a faint off-white ring. Aroma of toffee, sweet malts, crackers, corn, cereal grains, and a hint of citrus. Flavor of sweet and crackery malts, toasted sugar, dry grains, molasses, and mild spices. Medium-bodied, with a dry, malty mouthfeel and crisp carbonation. Almost reminded me of a California common. Pretty good.

Light orange-red, beige cover. Aroma is vague sweet, kinda bland. The taste has bitter molasses quite prevalent, caramel, and metal. Not much that I like here.

Deep gold with a hint of red, fluffy white head and lace. Light sweet malt aroma. Sweet malt with a hint of medicine/herbaliness, with a mild bitter. A tad thin and a bit fizzy. Still a good beer.

On tap at the Nashville brewpub. Poured a clear amber color with a one finger white head. The aroma was very barleywine like, with vanilla, molasses, sugar and some spices. The flavor was molasses and spice. There was a significant bitter finish that hung around for a few minutes. The palate was average, with soft carbonation, a slick mouthfeel and a medium/full body.

Nice amber beer with faint white head. Little aroma to speak of. Has a sweet taste with notes of molasses and spices.

On tap, Nashville brewpub. An interesting and unique ale, with distinct flavors of molasses and floral honey. That makes it sound sweet, but it isn’t, being leavened by soft spices like white pepper, a heavy dose of ginger, and cardamom. Noble-esque hop bitter in the finish. Hazy copper in the glass with almost no head. Smells of carnations and fruit cake.

Draft at Nashville. Pours pale golden amber with a fluffy white head. Faint aroma of toasted grains and floral hops. The flavor combinations on this are odd. Flavors of corn flakes, molasses and smoke with a touch of soft european like hop bitterness.

Tap. Mahogany pour with a lemon tinted head. Wet Popsicle stick nose. It is odd to say the least. Mmmm, sugardaddy, mmmm. A nice bitter level in the finish. Leaves an enjoyable salty sweet taste. Marshmallows, oh yes bu11zeye, I said marshmallows. Good. Ap-4 ar-4 tas-6 pal-4 ov-15
