Formerly Hazzard Ten Ale

Loaded Cannon Ale - If youíre a fizzy yellow beer drinker this is definitely not for you. With an alcohol content of 10% it is the strongest beer brewed in South Africa, the most defining character however is itís flavour. It is dark red in colour, has a thick creamy head, and a strong malty character. The sweetness has been balanced by adding large amounts of hops to the beer after fermentation, a process called dry hopping. Itís definitely the beer that is the most fun to make.

I made this for my cooler evenings. Please consume with care.

Only available in 340ml bottles.

10% alc/vol. Ingredients - Malted Barley (pale, crystal), Roasted barley, Sugar, Hops (Styrian, Southern Promise, Hallertauer Northen Brewer), Water, Yeast

Bottle from Tops @ Spar, Cape Town. Clear amber pour, thin white head. Aroma full of unfermatable sugars, some caramel. Flavor is overly sweet, a bit alcoholic and one dimensional. More like a malt liquor, without any complexity.

Does not taste like an american strong ale but rather like a barley wine. Some notes of malt and apple. Decent, but not again. Weak aroma, small head.

330ml bottle 10% ABV. No apparent "hot" flavour. A few sips in and you can feel it, but not taste it! A very nice Ale

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2014 Pours deep caramel with nice off-white head. Aroma is loads of toffee and light roasted malt. Sticky and thick syrup mouth feel with low carbonation. Aftertaste is more toffee, floral hop bitterness, alcohol and lasting metal finish. Overall: Enjoyed the toffee notes. Too sweet and metallic in the aftertaste.

Bottle Cape Town. Pours coke maroon clear dark redbrown with mediumlight head and medium carbonation. Aroma is malt, caramelised sugar molasses. Taste is instant bitter at first with sweet aftertaste. Carries the high abv quite well. More adventurous than the other Boston brews. Moutfeel is sugary. Overall not bad.

Bottled from Banana Jam Cafe, Kenilworth, Cape Town. Big double in the Belgian Het Kappitel style. Sweet & sour, strong & boozy, short lasting head, malty with a hint of danger.

Bottle on 11/8/13 from Loco Liqour. Pours a deep clear copper with two fingers of off-white head. Small lingering head that stays throughout. Aroma is light yeast, some malt, bready. Taste is almost sour, sweet, malty, a bit of red wine, oak. Finishes metallic and grass and beef jerky??? Yup, beef jerky. The 10% abv comes through similar to how alcohol in high abv malt liquors comes through (Steel Reserve comes to mind): a sort of sugary sweetness reminiscent of a strong Belgian ale but without the depth of flavor. Moderate-to-high carbonation. Very light in body. Overall an ok beer. Not sure I would drink again but its good to see South Africa putting out some high abv beers and pushing the local envelope a bit.
