22oz bottle: this one pours a very dark brown color, yet it is clear. A small tan head that leaves some lacing. Good nose. Some pine, herbal notes, a hint of chocolate and a whiff of alcohol. The taste is good. Big malt body, with just a small underlying sweetness. A pretty fair amount of hops to balance the malts. A touch bitter. Some roasted malts, chocolate, herbal flavors. Some grains and citrus. This is good!

[Bottle] Jet black pour with a dense brown foam on top. Nose is heavy on charred malts, anise and pine sap. Roasted grains, pine resin, grapefruit, tobacco, ashy wood, chocolate and mild coffee flavors. Alcohol is noticeable. Quite dry overall. Heavy body. A good sipper. Tasting notes from Big Blue Craft Beer Festival in Sheboygan on 10/18/14.

Location: 22 oz bottle from State Line, 2/2/15

Aroma: The nose is a roast/coffee malts, un-sweet chocolate, with some earthy hops, and a pine
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a frothy light brown head and heavy lace
Flavor: The flavor is along the same lines, roasty, not very sweet, and with a good bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-plus, fairly smooth, with a carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a pretty solid one. I’m thinking the hops may have been a hint past their prime, but still it’s a solid beer. I liked the balance, and it drinks nicely.

Pour on tap at Avery Sourfest 2014, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, roasted malt, some slight pine, orange peel, touch of earth. Taste is a mix of earth, dark fruit, toffee, some roast, hints of coffee, some slight tart fruit notes, finishing fairly bitter, slightly dry.

On tap at the Old toad. Aromas of roasted malt, licorice, piney hops. Black with a mostly lasting tan head. Dry, with some sweet maltiness, balanced by earthy hop bitterness. Medium-full bodied, complex.

Poured from a wax covered 22 oz bottle into a Caracole Saxo chalice. Pours brown with large brown head and lace. Aroma of roasty malts, straw hops. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of dark roasted malts, toffee, straw hops, hay, earth, caramel, nuts. Overall big and rich but lacking the dark roast bite typical of many black IPAs and overall more malty than hoppy bitter.
