Third in a series of Boulder Beers that seriously disappointed me... Appearance: clear, bright bronze color, under a perfunctory film of off-white foam. Aroma: faint, but sweet and fruity, actually comes right up to the typical amber ale smell, soft, subtle, malt showing more than hops. Taste: bright flavor, with no bite, no snap (though, I realize that it may be the brewer’s intention). Body is light, maybe creeping into medium, very little texture. Flavor is ample up front, malty, tasty, but then just fades away, leaving only a glimmer of a finish. An easy beverage to consume, but not, to this ale aficianado, to enjoy. Honest, I’d love to like it, but it’s a faint shadow of a beer, with the taste all up front, and swiftly disappearing, no finish, no substance, no texture. With this ambiguous sobriquet of "autumn ale", it feels as if they’re trying to twist an amber ale into an Oktoberfest, but to me, they came up short in the attempt. Actually, it’s much better, than the Pass Time Pale ale, and the Sundance Amber, but I really wanted much, much better. Next time, next time....

Rockies Brewing Company--Boulder Brewing--Fall Fest Amber Ale--1998 12 oz. Bottle. 6.00% ABV. (3.0 / 5.0) Amber Ale--Rich golden red color. Light fruit flavor in rich Oktoberfest style malt body. A little spicy and not grainy as the best Oktoberfests. More of a cross between an Oktoberfest and a Winter Ale. Sampled 11/27/1998.

Had this beer on 9/30/1998. Color is a rich amber with good carbonation and head. Aroma has a nice hop scent with light malt back tones. Taste is crisp and nice. It starts with a light bubbly body that goes down crisp and refreshing. The finish is also crisp with a fresh feel, lightly bitter and a nice light hop flavor. Its a well balanced brew with a nice fresh taste. Also it fits what a good Fall brew should be and this one would be wonderful on a cool Fall afternoon.

A yeasty murky amber brown concouction with a lot of dust on the bottle. Medium fizzly head, an indication it was on its way beyond shelflife. Lots of caramello, toffe and some forestry brushed pine notes. Could have been a lot more "seasonal." Let’s make a happy little tree.

12oz bottle pours amber with a short offwhite head. Aromas of caramel, and a bit of pine. Flavor is caramel, some toffee, and some citrus and pine notes as well. Medium bodied. Not much carbonation. Pretty average all around.

The aroma has caramel malt and pine hops with some spice and fruit. The appearance is deep amber with a small head. The flavor is not the best. There are all the elements from the aroma plus some prunes, paper, and grass. The palate is typical for an amber ale but the aftertaste is acidic. Much like the last Boulder Beer I had, this one could be stale.

Pours dark golden tending towards amber with a fully receding white head. Aroma of sweet caramel and flowery hops. Taste of sweet toffee, nutmeg, and toasted malts. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly sticky. Very nice label, wish the beer was as impressive.

Deep amber. Nose some piney hops, bit of caramel. Flavor is woody, some maltiness, bitter hops with pine and citrus at the end. Decent, but it needs more malt or more hops, just feels like it’s missing something.

Bottle (12oz). Poured slightly cloudy umber with a small off-white diminishing head. Aroma is of sharp evergreen resiny hops, but not rich or full - there’s also a background of light roast caramel/cocoa malt and pine cones - really does put you in mind of a walk in a late fall northern forest, although it gets a little funky on warming. Taste is much milder, the hops are muted and the malt is pretty basic, not much roast or caramel character - mouthfeel is weak and mostly flat, a touch astringent. The aroma’s the best thing about this, and even that’s not memorable.

UPDATED: DEC 14, 2008 [bottle - 12 oz] Slightly murky ruby pour with a soapy looking white head. Not much of it, but very nice color. Very light aroma, mostly caramel or toffee mixed with some apple cider aroma, cinnamon and grain. Apples begin the flavor with a malty and grainy middle and a dry and very flavorless finish. It claims dry hopped, but there weren’t many hops to be found. Some slight bitterness at the end of a few sips though.

bottle-pours glowing bright orange with a small soapy off-white head. grainy, lightly carmel, doughy aroma with a note of soil. flavors are mostly toasted malts and earthy hop tones. some bitting astringency on the body which brought the score down. the body was full for the style however. dry hopped? where? there is no hop aroma here, just alot of hop bitterness that is quite metallic in nature. some light diacytl in there as the beer warmed.
