The aroma is sweet, fruit, pine hops. The appearance is amber, clear, white head. The flavor is fruit, bread, some piney hops as well. The finish was pine hops. Medium/thick in body, sticky mouthfeel. Very good. I had the 2009 version of this as well. Same beer, just a little less hoppy on the nose and in the flavor.

22oz bottle. Rating #331. Hazy dark brown with some orange thrown in there and a light tan head. Nice dark sweet fruity aroma, dark caramel and a light hoppiness. Big rich caramel flavor, sweet spice and a light bitterness, pretty good barley wine. (1651)

’09 Bomber drank in Dec. ’10 so about a year in the bottle. Pours beautiful glowing gold orange in the glass. Above average carbonation, minimal almost nonexistent head. Banana peel dominates nose. Sweet with thinnish body. Banana comes through in the finish. Alcohol is well integrated and well balanced brew.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 otakuden (1558) - Vero Beach, USA - APR 8, 2011
Appearance: rich wooden hues of cherry and mahogany. Thin head fades into a thin collar encircling a thin tannish film. Swirls nondescript but releases a massive nose.
Nose: malty, spicy, woody, hoppy, and rustic. Cinnamon and nutmeg, fruitcake with candied cherries. Raisins and dates are dense and fruitcakes. Real licorice strings. Rich. Cherry cordials with little chocolate.
Palate: clean and decadent with gentle rustic froth – soft and velveteen bordered by rustic roughness of the woods. Doesn’t dry the back top of my tongue immediately, a wonderful parchment I am more than pleased to quench. Spice along the sides and back. Sweetness concentrated in the middle – maraschino cherries, raisins, and dates. Cinnamon. Red apple orchards with skin tannins, fleshy sweetness, and woods. Sweetness settles as warms up and flavors melt together.
Final Thoughts: age has done this barleywine very well indeed. Some of Boulder’s standard line of beers is alright for sessions and there is nothing wrong with a beery session, but stand outs like this reaffirm to my passion for beer.

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2011 2009 bottle, pours an opaque medium brown with slight orange red hew, with some head and lacing. Nose is fruity ketone’s, dried fruit and cherries. First sip is malty with notes of honey and corn sugar. Finish is mild with slight bitter citrus rind.
2007 bottle, pours an opaque dark chestnut brown with little head and lacing, the nose is mild with ketone, and some slight ester malty smells. Fir sip is sweet dried fruits like raisains and prunes. Thin body not very complex. Not boozy at all. Finish is sweet with no hops left. Tastes a litle cider like. I don’t think it held up all that well.
