COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

On tap at BLB pours a clear but dark mahogany red with a small khaki head. Aroma of candied cherries and lots of caramel malt. Taste similar to aroma with a touch of booze on the finish. Decent barley wine.

2013 release.
Appearance: The body is a beautiful clear ruby hue with a tall but short-lived tan head. The head settles into a frothy coating.
Aroma: The aroma is fruity and malty. The fruits were most notable on the pour coming off as fig with a hint of cherry. The malt aroma is sweet and inviting hinting at butterscotch and toffee. The aroma could use some strength.
Taste: Ah this is a shame, the flavor isnít nearly as malty and big as the aroma indicates, in-fact itís rather light overall. The intro is watery with some of the fruity aromas adding something to this. The malt base builds by the finish to a moderately sweet butterscotch and caramel flavor while the fruit gets stronger, sort of like medicinal cherry with a rather spicy finish. The finish lingers semi-dry and spicy.
Palate: Full-bodied with mild carbonation.
Overall: Let me get this straight, I enjoy this to an extent. It shows a lot of promise, but Iím left underwhelmed. The malt base is lacking and the booze shows a bit by the finish. This is priced decently though and is a decent barleywine all things considered.

~Strong bready malt character with carmel and strong earthy hops, ~Pours a very clear reddish amber with small off white head. ~Earthy hop character with bready malt character vinousy alcohol. ~medium bodied, medium low CO2 dry earthy finish. ~A bit bland for a barleywine. Hop character is a bit strong. I wish malt had more backbone.

Rich amber coloured body with a muddy brown highlight and a one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of pit fruits, caramel, toffee, pears, raisins and a subdued yet vibrant alcohol and oak scent. Full-bodied; Strong caramel and pit fruit sweetness throughout with a bit of vanilla, oak and scotch tastes and a little pear and tropical fruit sweetness. Aftertaste is quite complex with malt battling it out with the sugars and showing a touch of peat, alcohol and light spices. Overall, a nicely laced barleywine with some great flavours and a simple complexity despite not being too old. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 04-January-2013 for US$7.49 sampled at home in Washington on Christmas Eve 2013 - December 24th. 2012 Bottle (Wood Circle Marker) // Purchased Jan 2013 // Sampled Dec 2013

22 Oz. Bottle. Poured clear reddish amber, nice head and decent lacing. Very malty on the nose but well balanced with hops, some dark fruit in there too. Taste is consistent, sweet and malty, balanced with some fruit, the bitterness of hops. Very nice and enjoyable beer.

Kind of disappointed by this. Not quite a full barley wine. Very hoppy a and thin. Clear brown color. Malts, pear, and hops on the nose. Taste followed pretty straightforwardly. A little bit of mineral. Watery. Maybe I got a bad pour.

More like a rich imperial ipa. Big sweet malt with balanced piney hops. Minor brandy-like alcohol. Good, but needs some ageing...

Bottle to snifter (2013 vintage; shared with the Mrs.). Looks good for the style; a transparent mahogany with very pale beige head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells blandly sweet, malty, and a little boozy. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Maybe some caramel too. An underwhelming example of the style.
