Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

22oz bottle pours a reddy brown color with a bit of head. Malty aroma. Lots of malt and hop flavors along with some alcohol harshness.

Bottle from a 4 pack. Pours a dark Amber with an off-white head and a bit of lacing. Aroma contains caramel, pine, and plum. Tastes of roasted malt, raisins and plum. Not as much alcohol taste as most barley wines which is a good thing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pour is brown with a medium creamy tan head. Aroma is malty and tones of candied fruit. A very nice mouth feel soft and cream with lite carbonation. Maybe a little to easy to drink a 10% abv. A sweet beer but like the burnt caramel on a good pineapple upside down cake. Over all a great beer.

Bottle from Breeze Thru, cellar aged 4 months poured into my New Holland tulip. I really need to get an alternative that is a big larger. Pours a brownish amber with a white head, that lasts and lasts. Many streaks and some spots of lace on swirling. Aroma is of sweet malts and fruits, with a bit of nuttiness. And alcohol. Taste brings mostly sweet fruits, tangy pine, light nuttiness, a significant malt presence and some effervescence. Medium bodied and sticky. Finishes sweetly fruity, with earth and nuts. A solid, tasty fruity-for-style brew.

Red/amber pour with a small off-white head. Aromas of sweet malts with notes of dark fruits. Flavor is similar, really nice maltiness to this one. Notes of raisins and even a touch of fig. Abv is well-hidden. Solid barleywine.
