Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

Killer Penguin has some bite, Iíll give it that. The hops and booze combine to create a particularly aggressive barleywine. Copper color is a bit lighter than Iíd like and the head could be fuller. Smell is okay. Lots of citrusy hops but Iíd like to get more from the malt, especially since this brew has had the benefit of some aging. As a hophead, I certainly didnít dislike the piney and crisp taste. This ale would need some TLC before Iíd try it again. Not bad with a decent cigar, though.

Pours a finger of head on a clear dark straw body. The aroma is raisins, caramel, lemon and dark ripe fruits. The taste has brown sugar sweetness and mild bitterness. A short profile. The texture is crisp. Itís flavor is on the lighter/milder side for a barleywine, still tasty though.

Bottle. A- Hoppy, citrus, candied fruits, malty, caramel. A- Ruby color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Slightly bitter, malty, sweet fruits. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- This confirms my not so enthusiastic view on Boulder Beer. Maybe I should let this age for a year or two but it was certainly nothing I have experienced with a barleywine before. Lots of hops and malty and just not a lot of excitement in it. Tried pairing it with a cigar which did help it overall though.

2013 bottle. Very musty on the nose with hints of apple. Also caramel malt, piney hops, sweet cherries, and . Taste is musty old fruit, piney hops, grain, and some sweet malt. Palate is full bodied with a chewy, sticky mouthfeel. Carbonation is very soft, finish is sweet and a little sour as well. The year on it gave it some good flavors, but Iíve had other barleywines Iíd drink over this.

Bottled@SBWF2014. Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma and flavour are both quite sweet plummy and syrupy with some slight sweet alcohol, toffee and caramel to it. Not the most exciting Barley Wine around, but should work well as a dessert beer thanks to itís rather big sweetness.

"this stolen from kingerís review (which is spot on) "Sweet caramel and nutty malt aromas followed up by more of a candy sweetness, fairly one dimensional. Smooth and medium to lighter in body for the style, damn drinkable. Malt forward flavor of caramel, toffee, mild nuts and a residual sweetness. Seemed more akin to a Strong Ale in itís simplicity." definitely a one dimensional barleywine...just a touch of hops and candy fruit sweetness, but for me, it worked. very very drinkable for a 10% beer. nice sipper, nothing more or less.2012 a little hot. Sample at SBWF 2014. Clear amber beer with a decent offwhite head. Malty caramel aroma, onions, toffee, caramel, figs and raisins. Fruity toffee flavor, raisins, warming alcohol, toffee, some hay.

2012 bottle. Complex malty sweet aroma that contains notes of caramel and bread. Appearance is a cloudy copper with a white head. Flavor is malt forward with intense toffee, caramel. Bitterness is a low for the style. Mouthfeel is super thin with low carbonation. Overall, this beer tastes too oxidized and thin and therefore didn't hold up well to aging. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This is a 2012 bottle. Aroma is good but a bit odd. Body needs a big bump up and beer is super super cloudy. Now that the bad stuff has been said I really like the flavor of this. Matches the best English style barley wines that I have had. Worth the $6 for the bottle ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
