COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

Not a great barley wine, nothing special. Extremely malty with a little hops to it, it’s also has a strong alcohol taste to it. Glad I only have three more to drink.

2012 22oz bottle pours a dark copper with an off white head. Sweet malt and caramel aroma. Taste is the same.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep rust-orange with a tan head. Aroma is grapefruit, cocoa, caramel, canned mandarin, bread and a bit of roast. Taste is broiled grapefruit, hop bitterness, orange hard candy, a little dried fruit and roasty malt. Finishes slightly sweet. Nothing too exciting here, but still a nice barleywine.

650ml bottle. 2013 vintage. Pours a clear copper, nice suprisingly long-lasting tan/caramel head. Smell is thick color, flowers, bit of earth. Flavor is tangier, more of a fruit presence, but still retains a hoppy presence. It is heavy but not overly boozy.

Hazy amber brown color. Lasting white head. Light note of figs and raisins in the aroma. Nice bitter front that fades to mellow fig and raisin in the taste. It rinses clean leaving trace sweetness behind.

22oz bottle. Pours a deep red with foamy tan colored head. Some pine and citrus notes in the aroma along with some biscuit. Hoppy flavor up front followed by some alcohol warming and a bit of diacetyl in the finish. Full bodied. Not the best barleywine I’ve ever had, but I like it.

Pours a clear red-amber with a fair amount of tan head. Fair lacing and good legs. Head didn’t hold all that well though. Aroma is of sweet toffee malts, earthy hops, and a bit of oak-like wood. High carbonation and medium body give it a pretty enjoyable mouthfeel. Taste follows aroma very closely.

On draught at Lucky Labrador for the 17th Annual Barleywine and Big Beer Festival. 2012 vintage. Murky amber color. Aroma is citrus and plum, with a hint of caramel. Taste is candi sugar, prune, citrus hop bitterness, and sweet malt. Finish is fairly boozy, with a note of oxidation.

I am usually not as big of a fan of barley wines, but this one was a decent experience. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
