Commercial Description:
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

5-2-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to JW77
Medium red amber with a very short lived head. Big vanilla smell with the smallest hint of alcohol in the nose too. Vanilla and caramel and sweet hops are in the flavor. Drinkable just really a bit too much vanilla for me. The palate just drives me crazy - thin and really highly carbonated and doesn’t fit at all with the flavor.

2007 bomber from Uber and Enniskillen! Nose of caramel, fig newtons, and a flowery hop note; hazy rusty brown with a small beige head; flavor is light hop bitterness, brown sugar, and prunes and raisins; finish is slight brown sugar and hop bitterness. Decently good BW!

Bottle from Tops in Tempe, I believe, waxed 2007 version. Pour featured a big but fast fading off-white to amber head. Lacing was weak. The aroma was raisins, caramel, some piney hops. The flavor followed the aroma, big caramel and raisins off the bat, followed by a blend of brown sugar and then piney hops and some faint tea bags in the finish. Big malty beer, but the hops were somewhat balancing with the higher temperatures, which is where I quite enjoyed this one.

’07 bottle. pours a brilliant deep red with a 1 finger off white head. sweet & sugary malt aroma with a touch of caramel. solid medium to full body over the palate. banana up front, sweet and a bit of spice on the sides with the alcohol coming through on the back. strong finish - a bit too hot and ends abruptly. overall not a great BW... decent, worth drinking once... enjoyable, but nothing to really remember about this one.... typical for Boulder Beer Co.... just kind of average.

2007 bottle purchased at Wild Oats (Tampa, FL). Dark brown/copper color with a thin head. Aroma of dried fruit and sugar. Decent flavor. Alcohol is fairly noticeable, but not overpowering.

2007 vintage poured from a 22-oz bottle a dark copper color. Smell of sweet fruit and bread. Taste of caramel, malts and candied sugar with a nice spicy alcohol finish.
