COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

On draft at the Oskar Blues restaurant. 2010 vintage. Pours a hazy amber-red with a white ring. Big sweet aroma, with dark fruits, citrus, sugar, malt, and wood. Taste is almost sticky-sweet, of dark fruits and candied fruits, with malt, wood, and ends with a big alcohol bite. Lingering sweet wood. Nice barleywine.

2008 Vintage
Tasted on 5/13/12 from a waxed and capped 650mL bomber bottle purchased at Sun Devil quite a long time ago. Pours clear but dull dark amber with a thin beige head that slowly recedes to very thin lace. The nose is classic barley wine, with tons of caramel, toffee, honey, and milk chocolate, with a nice touch of roasted bitterness. The flavor starts off very nicely with tons of sweet caramel, maple, toffee, and honey up front, but before moving to the bitterness, a cardboardy oxidized flavor. The body is full with light carbonation and a long, unfortunately, oxidized finish, with the caramel taking a back seat.

Bottle. Pours a clear orange color with brilliant reddish highlights. Aroma is sweet and syrupy. Light earthy hop aroma. Smooth mouthfeel and flavor. Sweet malts, syrupy and maple. Easy finish. This is tasty! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice reddish coppery colour. Great mouthfeel, you can chew on this thing. It has a bold malty taste with a little sweetness to it.

Copper/orange, clear, beige head. Relatively subdued aroma is brown-sugary sweet with fruity notes and alcohol. Flavor again features brown sugar and toffee-like sweetness, a little dark fruit, some floral notes and a some hot alcohol. The body and overall malt profile seem a little on the light side for a barleywine.

Slightly hazy red-orange with medium light tan head. Aroma is dominated by hops, pine and grapefruit and just a touch of malt. Full body, alcohol well hidden. Flavor at first is quite sweet, caramel and molasses. A lot of hop flavor although not particularly bitter. Maybe too sweet and off balance but I like it anyway.

Bottle, 2012 edition. Pours a clear, reddish-amber body with an off-white head. Aroma of malts, raisins/prunes, and molasses and sugars. Taste is similar, although very sugary with a light citrus/floral hop flavor. The palate is a little light for the style and becomes slightly watery near the finish. Sticky mouthfeel with a slightly bitter finish.

Pours clear amber with a medium off white head. Aroma is malts and light molasses. Taste is, initially, sweet malts. That washes out almost immediately - the mid palate is watery. Then a very mild hoppy bitterness creeps in for the finish. Mmmmm. Have a hard time with this one. Not substantial like a barley wine should be. And I can?t quite tell if it?s hop forward or not.

Having on draft at the Split Thy Skull event at Tattooed Moms in Philly. Clear medium amber pour. Bit more dark red fruits. Smooth at the edge, but still very strong. Top half of barleywines Ive had.

Hearty aroma has robust notes of brown sugar, roast malt and spices (cloves & cinnamon). Comes out of the bottle (Was that bloomin’ wax really necessary? Makes it a pain in the arse to open!) a clear chestnut with a nice dirty wheat head that is not thick but hangs around. Flavor is - WHOA NELLIE! A powerful alcohol bite like the chomp of an angry pit bull, with brown sugar, nutty, caramel and malty notes and a hint of clove. Smooth texture has plenty of fizz, if not the firmest body. A killer penguin indeed!
