3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 3fourths (6212) - Boulder, USA - JAN 10, 2006
Semi-dark brown and rusty red hue, clear. Nose contains scents of sharp scotch, plums, cherries and wood, along with a more harsh or biting alcohol and unrefined bite - but the thing to note is that overall it’s a very faint scent... very light. Flavor-wise it’s on the low end of barley wines as far as texture, thickness and flavor goes... which is funny after reading the obligatory "you can’t handle this beer" blabber on the bottle. If anything, this would work well as a scotch or winter beer, but not what they try to call a winter barley wine. Light, crisp and fresh, with cherries and slightly sweet dark fruits and wood in the malt flavors, and a more sharp and biting hop presence. Seems they should give this one another go, it’s boring. Drinkable and tasty, but boring.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 ExpendableHero (511) - Florida, USA - JAN 29, 2012
Amber/ruby colored beer with a thin, off-white head. Aromas of mixed berries, and sweet dough. Tastes of cardboard, sweet dough, biscuit, bready malt, dark cherries and raspberries, caramel, and ends on a boozy warming flavor. Quite complex, a bit too heavy handed on the alcohol. Nevertheless this was an enjoyable brew.

Great aromatics and appearance. Fruity aromatics, both cherry and citrus. The palate and finish are completely marred with alcohol. It got worse as I drank it. Very disappointing.

Brand new 2011 vintage. Deep amber/brown with a light cream head. Aroma/flavor are caramel and moderate citrus hops with relatively clean bitterness. Not totally complex or inspired, but delicious nonetheless. medium-heavy velvet-syrup body.

Finishes with more big caramel notes, pine resins, citrus, spicy hops, sweet malt, hints of brown sugar and soft cake notes.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 12/28/11, 2011 Bottle, covered in Red Wax
Aroma: The nose is fairly sweet, with mostly fruit and caramel notes, and a touch of booze too
Appearance: The pour is a mostly clear dark reddish-amber color with a small beige head
Flavor: The taste is medium-heavy sweet, minimal bitterness, with mostly fruity and malty flavors to it
Palate: Medium bodied, with a sticky, almost cloying mouthfeel, finish has minimal heat and dryness
Overall Impression:
I thought this was a decent beer, but something was missing from making it a great Barley Wine. I also found it to me a touch on the one-dimensional side (sweet), and the almost cloyingness of that sweetness. I liked it, but I still felt like it was missing something slightly.
3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 DesertDevil (3) - Arizona, USA - JAN 2, 2012 does not count
2011 bottle. Pours a clear, deep red color with a frothy white head and thick lacing. The aroma is quite faint with sweet malty and caramel tones. Taste of burnt caramel and a bit of buttery popcorn. The taste of alcohol goes from medium to heavy with a dry finish. A decent barley wine.
