COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2009 22 oz wax sealed bottle, 2008 vintage Pours a dark tawny amber color, with a medium tan head. Aroma strongly favors citrusy hops like Cascade or Perle, with some brown sugar and maltiness as well. After an initial hop bite, the palate changes to a rich brown sugar and malty taste, that is just a bit on the sweet side. The mouthfeel is excellent. Its thick and robust, without being overwhelmingly solid. Overall, a very enjoyable beer.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark red/brown with some fluffy head. Lots of scotch on the nose, some roast and hops. Little bit of caramel and dark fruit.

Pours a hazy amber with a very small, off white head that dissipates to a thin cap. Decent amount of lacing. Nose has a lot of caramel and roasted malt with honey, dark fruits, floral and citrus hops. There is a nice boozy undertone mixed with vanilla. Mouth is very creamy and caramel loaded up front. Some dark fruit and milk chocolate with a slight roastiness present.

Feel good for waiting this out and snagging a 12oz bottle. Nose of caramel and toffee, light but persistent hop prickling, smooth but there’s a bunch of booze showing, though not offending. Some fruit, brown sugar. Pours a deep, dark amber with a tan head. Taste all booze and caramel and muddled fruit, very sweet but not cloying with bare-bones bitterness on the bottom. Smooth, swishable full body, not too fat, a little oily with nice complexity. And very soft. Booze really is sharp, brings a little grape and blackcurrant, but doesn’t burn so much as it fumes. Fine.

Bottle from Hazel’s beverage world. Dark amber color, white head. Bitter taste with caramel, floral hops, nuts, honey, roasted malts and citrus. Bitter finish with hops and honey. Good barley wine.

2008 Vintage
Tasted on 5/13/12 from a waxed and capped 650mL bomber bottle purchased at Sun Devil quite a long time ago. Pours clear but dull dark amber with a thin beige head that slowly recedes to very thin lace. The nose is classic barley wine, with tons of caramel, toffee, honey, and milk chocolate, with a nice touch of roasted bitterness. The flavor starts off very nicely with tons of sweet caramel, maple, toffee, and honey up front, but before moving to the bitterness, a cardboardy oxidized flavor. The body is full with light carbonation and a long, unfortunately, oxidized finish, with the caramel taking a back seat.

Bottle. Pours a clear orange color with brilliant reddish highlights. Aroma is sweet and syrupy. Light earthy hop aroma. Smooth mouthfeel and flavor. Sweet malts, syrupy and maple. Easy finish. This is tasty! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice reddish coppery colour. Great mouthfeel, you can chew on this thing. It has a bold malty taste with a little sweetness to it.

Copper/orange, clear, beige head. Relatively subdued aroma is brown-sugary sweet with fruity notes and alcohol. Flavor again features brown sugar and toffee-like sweetness, a little dark fruit, some floral notes and a some hot alcohol. The body and overall malt profile seem a little on the light side for a barleywine.

Slightly hazy red-orange with medium light tan head. Aroma is dominated by hops, pine and grapefruit and just a touch of malt. Full body, alcohol well hidden. Flavor at first is quite sweet, caramel and molasses. A lot of hop flavor although not particularly bitter. Maybe too sweet and off balance but I like it anyway.

Bottle, 2012 edition. Pours a clear, reddish-amber body with an off-white head. Aroma of malts, raisins/prunes, and molasses and sugars. Taste is similar, although very sugary with a light citrus/floral hop flavor. The palate is a little light for the style and becomes slightly watery near the finish. Sticky mouthfeel with a slightly bitter finish.
