Commercial Description:
Only 120 precious barrels were brewed, adding more than half a ton of extra malt and twice the amount of Amarillo hops, so prepare your self for a full sensory explosion. The double dry-hop addition elevates the grapefruit-like aroma and flavor to an outrageous intensity, while the added malt raises the alcohol level from 7% all the way to 10% by volume.

12oz - Aroma is strong citrus hops, mostly grapefruit and caramel malts. Pours orange with a sudsy medium sized head and good lacing. Flavor is full of grapefruit hops with a caramel back. Palate is very tart and bitter. Not very balanced and a bit too hot with alcohol. Still tasty, but not something I would want to drink a lot of.

12oz bottle. Perfumy, grassy and floral hops overpower the nose. Some light citrus and pine, but leaning toward more Noble Hop tendencies. Light, toasted biscuit malt with a touch of honey underneath the hops. Has a very filtered look to it: bright, clear copper with a huge cloudlike white head. Grassy and floral hops... lots of them on the tongue. The alcohol is present as well as some toasted malt. Balanced, and not extreme for an IIPA, but it just doesn’t do it for me. Medium to full bodied with the alcohol showing more on the finish along with plenty of bitter hops.

This beer’s 200th rating. Bottle. Pours a cloudy burnt amber. Tons of fluffy white billowing head on this one. A tremendous amount of lacing left on the glass. About as appetizing as an IPA can look. Aroma is good enough to let you know what’s going on but not enough to overpower you. Floral hops, citrus. Typical double IPA. Flavor is the same: sweet citrusy hops, bottomed-out malts. Nice medium body, has a nice bitter finish. Quite drinkable. 10% is completely undetected. One of the best and most balanced DIPA’s I’ve had.

(bottle, sample at Zipp’s winter tasting) Pours light copper with a white head. Fairly nice nose of ctirus, with orange, pineapple, and then some light pine as well. Taste is really sweet caramel, with some tastes of citrus, and a lingering finish of bitter grapefruit peel and pine. Fairly full mouthfeel, not bad.

22oz bomber.
Pours a hazy light auburn in color. Plenty of head and very nice lacing. Smell is subdued hops. Taste is much the same. Plenty of bittering piney and grassy hops. Just a hint of citrus hop underneath, but you have to push to find it. Decent brew, but unfortunately I’ve been drinking a lot of HopSlam lately and this just can’t compete.

Pours a nice light copper with a small head and nice lacing. I can definitely smell the grapefruit with a hint of malt in the background. The presence of alcohol is subtle for an IIPA, and the taste is a great blend of fruity hops and earthy malt. Mouthfeel is superb - clean, clear and bright. The bitter aftertaste lingers on the sides of the tongue and well into the throat.

22oz bottle. Reddish copper color with a one fingered head (I have big fingers). Beer looks to be filtered, no yeast or sediment and the clarity is excellent. I do have to wonder why you would filter a IIPA. Aroma is perfumey hops, with floral notes and some caramelly, biscuty malt. The nose seems somewhat restrained to me, though I have had some congestion lately... The taste is certainly not lacking in the hops, which come across as herbal, grassy, and floral with little to none of the citrus this hop seems to exhibit. There is a light honeyish malt backing but the malt seems to stay in the background. Nice mouthfeel, alcohol is not apparent, but the bitterness is, although it comes across as fairly smooth and clean, as Amarillo always does. You can do a lot worse than making an all Amarillo IIPA, but the beer has nowhere the complexity of flavor that I was looking for. I’ll drink another IIPA tonight to see if it was me or the beer.

Very light and balanced double IPA. Not think or syrupy. Pours a small light head with small amounts of lacing. Alcohol is not a strong factor. This is not my favorite double IPA but it is very tasty. Worth trying for sure. Lets go G men!!!
