ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA Apr 1, 2009 Bottle. Not sure why I got this, probably because it was a Double IPA I have never had before. Pour is dark yellow / brown with a white head. Smell is sweet with citrus and some pine. Grass, typical double IPA smell. Little bit of alcohol in it too. Taste is sweet, somewhat bitter, smooth and easy to drink. The alcohol which is in the nose is not present in the taste - it is masked almost completely. A good beer, not something I would want to have all the time, but its worth trying. thornecb (1735), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Mar 30, 2009 Updated: Mar 31, 2009Pours light amber into a Tulip. Rocky off-white micro head with excellent retention. Sweet pine and resin aromas. Sweet caramel upfront and creamy with a subdued orange citrus, hop and alcohol finish. More like a mild imperial pale ale. beerandIT (177), Richmond, Virginia, USA Mar 28, 2009 Sweet and citrusy. But kind of almost flat. Strong grapefruit on the nose, which gave me hope but did not deliver on the flavor. A bit of orange peel on there. Nice zesty flavor in that way. Does not have enough of that hop bitterness that I have come to expect from a double ipa. Also being such a high priced 4 pack, I am going to have to say to the guys at boulder lets step it up a notch. pauljackson1 (25), Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA Mar 28, 2009 A fully-hopped, and surprisingly pale for the strength double IPA. Plenty of hops are added to balance the disinctly sweet malt in this extreme beer. I concur with the brewer that the hops have contributed a citrus flavor most similar to grapefruit. I also concur with Cletus with respect to the touch-of-honey finish. A unique offering in the ever-expanding high-gravity market. Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Mar 25, 2009 Pours amber with a white head. Smells of citrus, resiny, earthy. Tastes bitter and resiny with some bitter citrus hints and a touch of honey on the finish. yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA Mar 22, 2009 Mojo Risin’ is a clear, sparkling, light amber ale with a small white head. The aroma is of pine cones, grapefruit and orange peel, resin and alcohol. It is medium bodied, smooth, and the finish is pretty clean. It’s quite bitter! There are flavors of pine tar, orange peel and grass. The finish is slightly sweet. There’s not a lot of finesse here, but it’s pretty exciting. maxa9 (20), , Washington, USA Mar 21, 2009 12 oz bottle purchased from Belmont Station, Portland OR. Snifter. Pours light red/orange, little head, very faint lacing. Still looks tasty. Not a very strong nose. Flavor made even less of an impression. Which isn’t to say that I won’t buy it again. Palate is solid. Not too light or over-carbonated. I like Mojo better. ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Mar 19, 2009 Appearance: Pours a clear, orange-hued body layered with a full inch of off-white foam. Decent amount of lacing on the way down.
Smell: Aromatic citrus-scented hop bouquet, a veritable platter of fruit, with lesser though substantial malt notes underneath.
Taste: Pale malts along with sweetish tastes of honey and light caramel dogged by the zesty taste of citrusy hops providing plenty of citric tangerine and ruby red grapefruit and a moderate amount of hop bitterness. Tiny hint of pine. Little boost of alcohol arrives prior to the finish. Finishes dry and bitter with a long (though never tedious) aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Just a touch of stickiness to the mouthfeel.
Drinkability: I’ll come clean -- sometimes the use of Amarillo does it for me and sometimes is doesn’t at all. Thankfully, this was a case of the former. A good Double IPA that drinks fairly easily considering the ABV percentage.
