Only 120 precious barrels were brewed, adding more than half a ton of extra malt and twice the amount of Amarillo hops, so prepare your self for a full sensory explosion. The double dry-hop addition elevates the grapefruit-like aroma and flavor to an outrageous intensity, while the added malt raises the alcohol level from 7% all the way to 10% by volume.

Not one of the more hoppy Imperial IPAs, this one seems to emphasize the sweet malt more than the hops. In fact, the malts are quite sweet, very caramely, somewhat toasty, and lightly earthy in the finish, while the hops are heavily weighted toward orange citrus and sweet pine, but only moderate in bitterness. It’s a fairly fruity beer as well, showing ripe stone and tropical fruits and orange marmalade. The nose is also sweet-smelling, fruity, caramely, and quite toasty. On the palate, the beer is full bodied and a bit sugary, but the carbonation is on the low side, and it’s clearly not brewed to full dryness. The beer pours very hazy and golden-orange in color, with a thin sheet of off-white head that fades to a thin ring. Overall, this is a tasty and enjoyable beer, but it’s sweet and caramely, so if you like ’em dry and very hoppy, this probably shouldn’t be high on your list to seek out.

12 ounce bottle. Deep honey gold color. Large bubbly beige head. Light grainy toasted malt aroma. Toasted malt flavor has bittersweet backdrop and sweet malt flavor. Can’t get it out of my head, like ELO!? Hard to believe this is 10% ABV. Great clinging lace. I want to go play a Door’s record and look at the label. All in all, a nice DIPA.

Not too bad but a bit light on the IPA taste, light scent and ok taste that fades fast, nothing bad to say but nothing really stands out either ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours clear gold orange with 2 finger white head. Aroma is faint, not picking up much at all, a bit creamy, light grapefruit. Taste is muchmore hoppy thhan the aroma, really long lingering bitterness,a bit harsh, dryy finish. Not bad not great.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/28/2014. Pours crystal clear bright orange color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, light pine, caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good complexity of citrus hops and moderate malt sweetness; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, pineapple, orange peel, floral, grass, pine, caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, pine, caramel, bread, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of juicy hop flavors and moderate malt sweetness; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good IPA. Good complexity of juicy hop flavors and moderate malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

On tap at The Tap in Bloomington Ind. Gorgeous deep amber color with next to no head and minimal lacing. Grapefruit nose with a tad of high abv sweetness. Punch of bitter up front that lingers with malt and ends like an IPA should. This is an American beer.

Pours slightly hazy gold with a extremely active carbonation and big white head. Aroma is heavy bubblegum type strange yeast, with lots of malt to, a bit to intense in the wrong way. Syrupy unpleasant texture with sweet citrus hops. Its just got a very oily texture, and the hop flavors don’t work well with the malts. Very dry also. Honestly its kind of a high ABV train wreck and I’m not a fan. I think the yeast doesn’t work well with the malts and hops either. Pretty hard to drink, and the bubblegum type flavor I’m getting from the yeast just permeates it and makes it way to rich, don’t know how else to describe it. Upon finishing the beer I had to lower the score because I just couldn’t do it. I had to dump it, the heavy yeast flavor was making me nauseous. I really don’t see the appeal here.

To sweet for an IPA. Actually the grape taste reminded me too much of southern comfort........of which I am not a fan ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2014 Pours dark copper with 1 and 1/2 inch off-white head. Loads of lacing. Aroma is mostly yeast. Little bit of hops and malt. Not a typical IIPA aroma. Flavor is also very yeasty but the resiny hop flavor is also well pronounced. Complex flavor with dark fruit, spices, and caramel, Heavy body which is a big plus for this beer. Chewy mouthfeel. Boozy on the finish. Astringency in the aftertaste. Very good beer, however, I think it would be better suited in the american strong ale category due to the lack of hop aroma and bitterness associated with IIPAs. Great beer, just mis-categorized.
