Commercial Description:
Only 120 precious barrels were brewed, adding more than half a ton of extra malt and twice the amount of Amarillo hops, so prepare your self for a full sensory explosion. The double dry-hop addition elevates the grapefruit-like aroma and flavor to an outrageous intensity, while the added malt raises the alcohol level from 7% all the way to 10% by volume.

THOUGHTS: I haven’t had many Boulder Beers, but I’ve like most of them. I liked this one too, but there was nothing special about it. It hid the alcohol, incredibly well at first. The flavor balance could have been a little better, but it was fairly well balanced. It got better and better as it warmed. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a light to medium orange, with and average to large, creamy, off-white head that left excellent lacing. The aroma was moderate caramel malt, moderate citrus (grapefruit and orange) hops and some alcohol as it warmed. The initial flavor was light to moderately sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was moderately sweet and heavily bitter with an average to long duration. There was caramel malt and then a bunch of orange and grapefruit hops. The alcohol come out much more as it warmed. The medium to full body was sort of syrupy with fizzy carbonation and an ever so slightly alcoholic and a metallic, but not harsh finish.

Enjoy this beer, for it is classic. Tastes like any other well made double IPA. Bitter yet smooth and full of hop flavor till the end.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear amber/copper color with a small lasting creamy off white head. The aroma is crisp citrus (grapefruit and orange), light pine, and moderately sweet. The flavor opens with moderate sweetness and big grapefruit character before finishing with nice hoppy bitterness. There is enough malt to stand up to the hops. Medium/full bodied. The 10% is well hidden. I like this one alot. Maybe I should change my style preference to IIPA?

This beer pours a clear amber color with a rich frothy head. Hops really slammed my nostrils on the pour. I smelled hops and a good helping of citrus on the nose. The pour and the smell really make you want to gulp the beer. This is a tremendous double IPA. The hops explode on your taste buds. The citrus flavors (especially orange) dance around your tounge. The mouthfeel is excellent. I am excited to try a few more of the beers from Boulder if this is any indication of the quality of the brewer. GREAT BEER!

This beer’s 200th rating. Bottle. Pours a cloudy burnt amber. Tons of fluffy white billowing head on this one. A tremendous amount of lacing left on the glass. About as appetizing as an IPA can look. Aroma is good enough to let you know what’s going on but not enough to overpower you. Floral hops, citrus. Typical double IPA. Flavor is the same: sweet citrusy hops, bottomed-out malts. Nice medium body, has a nice bitter finish. Quite drinkable. 10% is completely undetected. One of the best and most balanced DIPA’s I’ve had.
