3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DocLock (5966) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 9, 2012
Draft at RR Street. Pours medium brown with off-white head. Nose is dark malt, oaky bourbon, hops, vanilla, and sherry. Tastes malty, with a well integrated oaky and bourbony flavor, vanilla rising as it warms, backup hops, and malt to spare. This one gels very well.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 bhensonb (7579) - Woodland, California, USA - OCT 20, 2011
Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of oak with a hint of pine. Full bodied. Flavor is rich dark malt with lots of oak and maybe a touch of bourbon. Suddenly it’s really oaky. Finishes slightly sweet pine. Excellent.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sickboy282 (1109) - San Diego, California, USA - SEP 28, 2011
Pours a deep brown hue with a fraction of a head. Not much to the aroma category, but the flavors of roasted nuts, caramel with a mild bitter finish. Decent, but not amazing.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 redlight (2265) - Winter Park, Florida, USA - SEP 26, 2011
draft @ redlight redlight. Light coffee notes on the aroma with hints of chocolate. Pours a very dark amber, brown color with no head. Bourbon flavors up front very oaky with vanilla notes, followed by bitter hops and a sticky piney aftertaste. Very nice.

8 ounce sample on tap at the Davis Beer Shoppe. This beer is apparently a Black IPA that was aged on bourbon barrels. A tricky style classification. The aroma has a nice vanilla and oaky bourbon character. Not too much else going on in the nose, but that is certainly fine with me. I dig the nicely aromatic bourbon character. Mildly transparent dark mahogany body with some cola-colored hues present. Nice, creamy off-white/light tan head that leaves some great lacing. Starts with a good deal of bourbon flavors. Followed by some lightly sweet vanilla in the middle. Finishes with herbal and bitter spicy notes. This is a little too thin for me, but this is nicely flavorful. I don’t know what the point of barrel-aging and IPA is. Seems like a waste of hops to me. Nonetheless, this is the only Boulder Brewing Company beer that I would ever consider buying again, so good work.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 spjensen (50) - Davis, California, USA - SEP 19, 2011
Taster at the Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark brown. Markets itself as a black IPA however no trace of hoppiness. Oak and caramel aromas come out strong. A bit boozey.
