jbye4334 (313), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Jun 21, 2009 (bottle from Springs Liquor Outlet in Colorado Springs). Pours a black color. medium size tan head. Average malt and light wood aromas. Astringent finish. Good lacing. Long duration. Moderate carbonation. Gypsy19 (464), Sacramento County, California, USA Jun 12, 2009 Pours a dark brown with an initially healthy head that collapses quickly. Aroma is of dark malts, chocolate, a little coffee, slight sweetness in the aroma. The oatmeal is present too. Flavor isn’t extremely robust, but is of medium intensity. This kind of reminds me of Sierra Nevada Stout a little, though a little more creamy. Flavor has again chocolate, strong coffee this time around, and just a pinch of brown sugar with a slightly metallic finish. Mouthfeel is pretty full, medium carbonation, but gets a little watery after the 4th or 5th sip. Pretty good stout, not overpriced, so worth a try by stouties and non-stouties alike. Overall, good plus. CheersMate1 (608), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 24, 2009 Picked up at Five Points Bottle Shop in Athens, Georgia. SLIGHT off-white head. Nice vanilla sweet aroma. Not so much of a coffee, woody aroma, but a nice sweet aroma. The wood slowly develops into an awesome wood aroma. Vanilla and wood really come out as I let this arm up. The flavors are very nuanced. I feel this beer gets better as one becomes more patient. The vanilla sweet aroma/flavor is the greatest thing about this beer. Very nice wood character. I think this is a great beer. Underrated brew. Wish other stouts would have this wood/vanilla flavor. Cheers. guzzler67 (1240), Hanover, Maryland, USA May 24, 2009 Deep, dark brown, almost black, appearance with a small, light brown head and real nice lacing. Roasted malt aroma, highlighted by bitter chocolate and coffee. Earthy, woodsy, nutty taste, with chocolate, chicory and vanilla. Full bodied mouthfeel with a lingering finish. vinerd (17), Largo, Florida, USA May 24, 2009 Aroma is coffee, alcohol, and leathery tobacco. Taste is pretty yummy. The oatmeal stands out, rounding out the hoppy coffee and chocolate. Left a nice chocolate aftertaste for me to savor. Hank1980 (639), Athens, Georgia, USA May 21, 2009 2006 bottle shared at tasting. Poured dark brown with cream head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, oak. Really nice. Tasted similarly, with smooth oak providing a nice backdrop for the roasted malts and light hop flavors. A little bitterness from the malts. Very nice full bodied mouth. Overall, a nice beer that appears to have aged well. Ughsmash (3669), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA May 15, 2009 Bomber. Poured deep brown with a creamy, easily-resuscitated cap of tan head. The aroma picked up lots of cake-like baker’s chocolate accented by vanilla, earth, and oak.. deep down was light floral and spice character. The flavor was cakey as well with semi-sweet and darker chocolates, licorice, and vanilla at the core.. oaky and earthy notes around.. the aftertaste had some bourbonny sugars and more chocolate. Medium-bodied with moderate-plus carbonation and a bit of sourness from the oak.. flowed well across the palate.. not terribly complex, but tasty. TheBeerOrg (1482), Kentucky, USA May 11, 2009 Pours near black with a mostly receding tan head. Aroma of toffee, coffee, cherry and caramel. Taste is mild coffee, chocolate, fruity hops and dusty wood notes. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. Mellow and tasty.
