hiddenvariable (181), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 20, 2008 Updated: Apr 22, 2008 on tap at kelly’s. pours an opaque black with a decent tan head, which leaves a few hints of lacing. fairly strong molasses nose, with hints of roasted malts and cocoa, and quite a strong fruity character, dominated by raisins and grapes. fairly dominant vanilla taste, with more roast malts, dark fruits, and molasses. fairly sweet finish with a light bitterness that doesn’t quite balance properly. medium to full body with a silky mouthfeel, and quite a bit of carbonation. a bit too fruity and light for a stout. i’d prefer more roasty malts and cocoa notes in place of the grapeyness. not horrible, just not overwhelming in its wonderfulness.
BuckeyeBoy (1113), Boise, Idaho, USA Aug 12, 2008 22oz Bottle Pours out a back/brown topped with a tan head. Aroma of coffee, some chocolate and plenty of smoke. Tast nice and smooth. With some nice sweetness. Plenty of the roast malt also that smoke on the end. lb4lb (1340), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 8, 2008 Pours mostly black with a touch of light getting through and a short lived beige head. Smell is coffee, ashy and burnt malt. Taste is roasty and ashy and burnt, again, and with some nice coffee flavor too. Not getting much creaminess from the oatmeal and its a bit bubbly for the style, but still tasty. A bit drying.
Nice beer. Beershine (1207), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Aug 6, 2008 Opaque dark brown-black with very large off-white head, looks luscious. Rich coffee and chocolate aromas. Roasty like a mocha ganache. Maybe some cherry in the background. Very nice, mellow, smooth flavors with nice lasting dark chocolate finish. Soft palate. Nice, light impy that actually manages to feel refreshing. oldbaldguy (2), , Minnesota, USA does not count Aug 4, 2008 Not quite opaque, which I found odd for this style. I got quite a bit of vanilla in the nose with the oak coming out nicely and not overdone. Poured up nicely with a rich, decent head. I was a bit disappointed upon tasting this as I found it a bit lacking in complexity and the finish a bit thin with a slight lingering sweetness. Overall, not bad, but not quite what I was expecting. Drink4Satan (461), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Aug 3, 2008 Pours an opaque near-black colour with an ultra-dense beige head that leaves nice lacing. The nose is rich with milk and dark chocolate, vanilla, heavily roasted malts, oats and some citric hops. The flavour brings forth rich chocolate and coffee goodness, dried fruits, booze, oats and some vegetable-like hops (diacetle?). The initial taste is a little muted, but nice roasty coffee flavours stand out in the finish. Mid-palate, the dried fruit and chocolate flavours are most dominant. The aftertaste is bitter cocoa. The mouthfeel is a bit watery, but the flavours are nice and complex. Very nice.
