2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 BBB63 (5023) - La Porte, USA - JAN 23, 2008
Bomber bottle and served in my Stone IRS snifter: Deep brown with reddish highlights topped by a frothy tan head and very good lacing. The aroma has notes of resiny and grassy hops, pepper and clove, white grape and tangerine, espresso, bakers chocolate and charred black malts.
The taste is utterly disappointing, weak and thin. There are malty overtones and bitter background but the whole thing seems watered down. The bitterness is easily found but lacks the sweet and chewy malt needed for proper balance. Worse yet is the complete lack of anything resembling oats/oatmeal. The finish indeed displays a woody oak character as well as some hop spice notes.
The mouth feel is aggressive and sprite with a bone dry and ashy finish. All in all this is a failed attempt at a bitter dark beer. These guys need to get on the phone with Three Floyds to figure out how to do this kind of beer.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Cybercat (1902) - Georgia, USA - MAY 19, 2012
Pours a deep, oily sable with a thin but fairly persistent buttery-tan head. Smoky aroma has an overtone of miso and notes of molasses, quality coffee, semi-sweet chocolate plus hints of caramel and wood - the latter definitely from the oaking. Flavor has a roast coffee core and subtle notes of caramel, chocolate and wood - typical of a good stout, and enjoyable. Just what I, a stoutie, like. Texture has firm body and just a little fizz. Though not an outstanding stout, definitely worthy of checking, especially if you love stouts and porters.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 pet3rman (309) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 12, 2012
An OK stout, not the best, with an abundance of black and chocolate malts then aged on oak to add an earthy character. Obovoid is a rich, smooth stout with a creamy, off-white head.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Koelschtrinker (7051) - Köln (Cologne), North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - MAR 31, 2012
12/11/12/11/8/12
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 DarkElf (2961) - La Jolla, California, USA - MAR 20, 2012
23-Jun-09 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 18-Jun-09 for $5.99 at O’Bryan’s Wine and State Liquor Agency in Loveland, OH) This beer pours dark brown with good clarity at the edges, while the light-tan head rises to only a quarter inch before settling quickly to a thin sheet and large-bubbled, wide ring. Wood and earth dominate the nose, with slightly sweet, roasted malts in the background. Not especially complex, but very aromatic and enticing. On the palate, oatmeal, slightly sweet roast, and chocolate are all prominent, along with notes of coffee and molasses. The beer also tastes woodsy and earthy, and these flavors are nicely balanced against the strong maltiness. The bitterness is only light to medium and it’s quite smooth, though there is some ashiness in the finish. It’s full bodied, chewy, slightly sticky, and smooth, with gentle carbonation. Spotty lace remains on the glass. Overall, a really nice oatmeal stout, flavorful, complex, well crafted, a beer I’ve enjoyed drinking and would purchase again.

On tap at Blind Tiger. Pours a dark amber color with an off white foam head. Aroma of vanilla roast and chocolate. Light sweet vanilla taste, vanilla almost fake. Some caramel and coffee mixed in.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 keanex (337) - Williamstown, New Jersey, USA - MAR 12, 2012
Poured into an English pint glass from a 650ml bottle with no date.
A: Nearly pitch black though it shows a clear garnet through the light with a thick rocky head that clings to the glass.
S: Huge blend of oak, chocolate and roasted malts. Reminds me a bit of tobacco even.
T: Bitter roasted malts, dark chocolate, and oak right away reminding me a bit of fresh tobacco. Decent beer.
M: A bit thin and watery at first, but fills out towards the end. Really light, almost non-existent, carbonation.
O: Solid option for the price, at times it reminds me of a poor mans Firestone Walker Parabola.
