COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Planet Porter is a big beer for everyone. Don't be afraid of the dark; this beer is very drinkable and remarkably smooth, brewed for a malty, coffee-like flavor. A once almost extinct style of ale, Boulder Brewing helped revive the category and this is now one of the oldest American porters.

10/19/11. 12oz bottle. Black pour with brown edges under a tan head. Slightly sour, musty, malty aroma that reminds of an old ale. Sweet, syrupy flavor that hints at peppers, old chocolate, and brown sugar. I’m thinking this bottle may be a bit old.

650ml bomber bottle poured brown in color with a small beige head and little lacing. Aroma is roasted malts and a trace of coffee. Taste is roasted malty sweetness and some earthy hop bitterness and coffee. Body is a little thin and carbonation is mild. A decent porter, but there are better ones out there.

GBBF. Cask. Cloudy dark brown beer, residual tan head. Light dry palate with a mildly sour nose. Ok brown malts with a trace of fruit. A little sour. Ok.

A: The pour is dark brown in color with a thin tan head. S: Quite roasty with a nice dark chocolate note. A light earthy hop character and some hints of dark fruits. Coffee is there toward the back end, as is molasses. T: A very similar array of qualities on the palate. Somewhat sweet with chocolate, molasses, and toffee. Dark chocolate and roasted malts give it a touch of bitterness, perhaps a small contribution from earthy hops. M: The body is a bit thin, unfortunately. Medium carbonation. O: Pretty nice porter. A bit weak on the mouthfeel/body, but otherwise not bad.

Bottle- Pours adark brown color with a tan head and bits of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, some coffee, trace of chocolaate and sweetness. Roasted malt flavor, sweet cocoa and a hint of bitterness. Fairly clean finish with a lingering syrup sweetness. Fairly medium body, a bit thin, smooth and way to sweet for a decent Porter. Has the potential for a good porter but way too sweet to fill the bill.

One-third pint, GraviCask from the USA Cask Ale Bar provided by BSF at GBBF’11, third day. The body content is black as coal. Fast dissipating beige head, loose lacing. Mid-sweet brown and black malts to the nose. Blend of coffee and chocolate in flavour added by earth and vanilla sweetness. Finish off in a bittersweet way. Rounded mouthfeel. Just a decent porter (London, 04.08.2011).

Cask (gravity dispense) at Great British Beer Festival, day 3, on 4 August 2011. Very dark brown colour. Loose, slightly frothy, but soon diminished head. Fairly dry and quite roasty. Hints of chocolate and a dab of licorice. Light, mellow mouthfeel. Solid and pleasantly drinkable, if nothing especially spectacular.
