3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
19-Dec-12 (12-oz bottle)
This is a straight-forward porter, opaque and nearly black in color, with a half-inch foam stand that is tan in color and settles to a wide ring. The nose is predominantly dark chocolate, black coffee, and burnt toast with a touch of licorice. It’s pretty much the same story when sipped; the dark chocolate and coffee flavors stand out, but dark roast finishes strongly with a slightly burnt character, and there is a general licorice note throughout. Medium in weight, quite dry on the palate, and moderately carbonated. Overall, this is about what I expect out of a "six-pack" beer; it’s drinkable, simple, to style, but not memorable.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Twelve ounce bottle from Beer Of The (Every Other) Month Club. Almost opaque dark brown/ruby color, nose of roasted malt and sweet dark fruit with some complexity, taste has some nice malty/chocolate notes but overall the flavor is too thin and watery with too much carbonation--doesn’t live up to the aroma’s promise.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle (from notes). Pours dark brown in color with a small khaki head. The aroma and flavor have light toasted malt, mild chocolate, light earthy hops with a slightly bitter finish. This is a bit thin and none of the flavors stand out.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 9/20
Thanks to Ken for providing this sample. The aromas malty, with notes of caramel, chocolate and coffee. A brownish-black pour with a robust rocky, rapidly dissipating, tan head providing moderate lacing. The taste follows the nose, roasted malts, with hints of coffee and coco. A bit of grain shows up in the finish. Medium-light body and medium carbonation. Overall, very drinkable, but not very robust in flavor.

Pours a nice coffee brown with an etched, light tan surface with the slightest rose color. Smells robustly soily, some cardboard, molasses and cocoa (nestle, carnation, something cheap). Flavor of coffee, cocoa, light toasted grain and some smoke. Thin with low carb and an off dry finish. Meh, wouldn’t look for this or advise somebody to drink.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Rich, roasted, but bright in flavor, black malt defines this porter, which is fresh on the nose and sweet, but almost sour, in roasted richness in the mouth. Nice and thin, but full enough on the palate, it’s a nice choice for breakfast. It tastes like fresh roasted malt and a little like coffee grounds, especially in the finish.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: very dark brown, with caramel edging when backlit; one finger of creamy light tan head and minimal lace. Aroma: chocolate, coffee, some nuttiness and general roast. Taste: sweet milk and dark chocolate, some coffee and cream. Finish: smooth and roasty, with lingering sweet chocolate. Notes: This is a pretty one dimensional porter, focused almost entirely on sweet chocolate flavors. That said, it’s still drinkable and tasty. It doesn’t try to do too much, but what it does, it does just fine.

Pours a black with a half a finger head. The aroma is roasted malt and chocolate. The taste similar with some coffee thrown in. I enjoyed the taste.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Beer of the Month club. Nose of roasted malts ( weak). Taste of some coffee, malt, touch of bitterness - but also a little thin on the finish, which detracts from the good start. Ok.

Bottle - via Ale in the Mail. Black and opaque. Roasty aroma with some malt. Very good. Definite roasty flavor but without being more like a stout like many porters do.
