Planet Porter is a big beer for everyone. Don't be afraid of the dark; this beer is very drinkable and remarkably smooth, brewed for a malty, coffee-like flavor. A once almost extinct style of ale, Boulder Brewing helped revive the category and this is now one of the oldest American porters.

Draft at the brewpub. A pitch black beer with a thin borwn head. The aroma is sweet with notes of roasted malt and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt as well as strong notes of chocolate and light notes of alcohol that burns slightly in the throat, which surprises me at 5.5% ABV.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours a very dark brown - close to black - with a reddish hue and a small, beige head. Sweetish, roasted malt aroma. Medium body with lots of sweet, roasted malty flavours and loads of chocolate accents. Slightly burned finish with touches of aroma hops. A very pleasant brew. 060706

Bottle at DIA - 04/06/12. Very dark brown approaching black with a thin tan head. Light roast malt nose allied to a little sweet chocolate. Chocolate taste, malts, dark fruit backdrop. Lightish body a little on the watery side, drinkable though.

A: The pour is dark brown in color with a thin tan head. S: Quite roasty with a nice dark chocolate note. A light earthy hop character and some hints of dark fruits. Coffee is there toward the back end, as is molasses. T: A very similar array of qualities on the palate. Somewhat sweet with chocolate, molasses, and toffee. Dark chocolate and roasted malts give it a touch of bitterness, perhaps a small contribution from earthy hops. M: The body is a bit thin, unfortunately. Medium carbonation. O: Pretty nice porter. A bit weak on the mouthfeel/body, but otherwise not bad.
