Draft: Molasses-brown. Tight beige head exhibits good retention. Pine needles, toasted oats, plums and brown sugar comprise the simple but pleasant aroma. Firm carbonic prickles. Foamy, as well. Initially zingy with chalky roast and brash minerals. Nice bittersweet interplay as the oats unite with the richer malts. Oats and copious amounts of chocolate malt generate ample velvety lushness which keeps the graininess at bay. Forced carbonation disperses much of the soft and refined malt richness before it is able to fully take foothold. Still shows fairly good depth as the nutty toasted oats persist alongside palate-adhering caramel. Earthy-hop punch contributes significant amounts of cheek-buckling acids, but gradually succumbs to the velvety grain resurgence. Flash of blackberry esters complements the vague citric hop undertones. Finishes with a bitter whisper of espresso and gritty char amid hints of nutty roast and chocolate fudge. A well-constructed stout that would benefit greatly from natural carbonation. One of BBC’s better efforts.

Draught. Head is mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, cocoa), moderately hoppy (resin), lightly yeasty (dough), with a note of chalk. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Fairly hoppy for a stout, and kind of uninspiring otherwise. Nice mouthfeel, but otherwise pretty mediocre.
