BeerBelcher (800), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Oct 26, 2007 I felt this to be a pretty marginal amber ale. I had a McTarnahan’s a few months ago, and have since been ruined for other amber ales (I really enjoyed it). This one was OK, but simply did not measure up to the best amber ales that are out there.
This beer pours a color that would best be described as...amber. Aroma was lightly hoppy, with a significant malt presence. Flavor was fairly balanced, but not very distinctive. As I was drinking it, I started to snack on some food, which made the hop character jump out at me a bit more, but it was no means substantial, particularly not for those who usually seek out large quantities of hop flavor. Mouthfeel was unremarkable.
There’s nothing wrong with this beer...it’s just a bit boring. There are times I crave roasty maltiness, and there are times I crave hoppiness. But there aren’t really times I crave middle of the road amber ales, so I’m not sure where this beer fits in my drinking repertoire. Not bad, but just not for me.
I bought this at Liquor Mart in Boulder when I visited CO for the Great American Beer Fest. It rode back to Milwaukee in my wooden leg.
Theis (2473), Frederiksberg, Denmark Nov 21, 2008 Draught at Boulder Beer. Clear dark amber - white head. Nice malty, grassy, caramel, light hoppy, roasted, grape fruits, dry finish. JaffaHawk23 (27), Broomfield, Colorado, USA Oct 29, 2008 This one was very surprising to me. Not much of an amber fan but the flavor here is top notch. They love there hops in Boulder and this one is lacking none for an amber. A little watery for my palate but a wonderful flavor and color. ditmier (286), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 24, 2008 Draught @ DIA - Pours reddish amber with a medium tan head...aroma is toasted grass, and slightly bitter...good amber flavour, has all of the roasted grain without the nuttiness that other (ahem) Colorado ambers have, finishes clean and with crisp bitters, flavour sticks around in the mouth for a bit...decent amber Skinnyviking (2965), Copenhagen, Denmark Oct 22, 2008 Draught. Low and quickly disappearing offr-white heade. Clear dark brown body. Aroma pretty strange soapy. Mildy hopped caramel malt flavor with high carbonation and a long aftertaste. patrick767 (1547), fort wayne, Indiana, USA Oct 20, 2008 bottle - Pours clear amber with a thin white head. It has a sweet caramel malt aroma. The flavor is pretty sweet as well but along with the caramel malt has some light, hoppy fruitiness. It’s light to medium bodied and has some bitterness in the finish. It’s a pretty good session brew.
