the name may be a little, uh, unsavory. if you were told your blind date was with a woman who had earned the nickname "sweaty"-- you’d regard that as a red flag. ’sweat’ in the context of any food item i just can’t consider appetizing. misguided marketing aside, the beer is a chalky yellow liquid, like stone-washed canarys; the head makes a good start, but recedes like a wet snowfall after a week of warm days. a very bready aroma, the moist heart of a wheat nugget, drenched in yeast, and cotton towels laundered in lemon scented baths. with all that yeast, the mouthfeel can’t help but be creamy, the taste has modest resemblance to a weak trippel: little apparent alcohol but earthy pear dumplings spritzed with a mist of lightly sweet citrus. a bit of dandelion bitterness. finally, the "hefe" outdoes the "wiezen", but it remains pleasantly clean and refreshing.

Lumpy (1802) - Carrollton, Texas, USA - OCT 13, 2004
Bottle. Smells like bubblegum and bananas. Taste is the usual wheat-banana, clove, bubblegum, and wheat. Finish is clean. Kinda bland. Quite thin. No big whoop.

BBB63 (5023) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - OCT 7, 2004
Bottle: Hazy golden hue with a very small fizzy head and little lace. The aroma has notes of banana and lemongrass esters, clove, wheat, aromatics and a touch of bitters. The taste starts fruity with the citric and banana overtones at the forefront and a backbone of wheat bread. The finish is mildly spicy and again a bit of bitterness does round off the taste. The feel is very crisp and lively, refreshing. Just a step below the best of the genre but ahead of a lot of just average hefes (even some from Germany). All in all... I would recommend this beer for someone to try at least once.

Jokes (1453) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 4, 2004
Slightly hazy golden body with almost no head. The aroma is sweet and lightly fruity. Light lemon, bubblegum, lightly tart wheat, banana and a touch of orange. The body is fairly thin, leaving something to be desired. The flavor is adequate, though lacking in heft. What’s there is pretty good, but it just seems watered down. Nothing special.

Crosling (1861) - Loveland, Colorado, USA - OCT 4, 2004
Hazy Yellow Fresh citrusy bright aroma with several notes of fruits especially lemons, green apples, honey dew and banana. Fresh, subtle, solid and refreshing wheat beer. An americanized hefeweizen with the usual banana, clove and nutmeg flavors but also some hints of lemon, ripe pear and apple.

JMerritt (1590) - Macomb, Illinois, USA - SEP 28, 2004
First half of bottle: Dark yellow, clear, absolutely no head. Very sparkling - tons of bubbles racing throughout. Sweet, fried banana aroma. Smooth, mellow banana sweetness accompanied by some honey and wheat tanginess. Nice carbonation level, which was a surprise.

Second half of bottle: THERE is the hazy yellow color I was expecting, as well as the large, pillowy head. Aroma is much yeastier. +1 aroma and appearance. Too little too late, though?

atpayne (615) - Zionsville, Indiana, USA - SEP 23, 2004
Cloudy yellow with compact clean white head. Imeadiate clover, bananna, and yeast aroma that seems to fit the style. Somewhat sweet, lighty, and malty. It’s spiced specificially with clove, which does work fairly nicely with the bananna flavor. Fairly crisp and a litter sour, it finishes midly bitter.

Terminus (2616) - Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA - SEP 16, 2004
22oz bottle-When i cracked this bottle, it made a huge popping sound. pours a cloudy darker yellow (didn’t know what to call it) with tons of yeast haze. the beer poured with a nice 1/2 inch pillowy white head. Effervescent carbonation throught the entire glass. aroma of banana. clove, lemongrass and a touch of belgian yeast. Flavors are metallic, plasticy, sour, lemony banana and not balanced. Very soft palate. very astringent finish. This had potential, but definately failed. This beer tastes like a mix of belgian and american wheat styles. THanks to whaleman for sending this one from Albuquerque.

iwantalambic (1478) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - SEP 15, 2004
22 oz bottle: hazed pineapple, with vigorous bubbles and a dense, milky white cream…thick, banana-clove essence in the aroma, along with a bitter citrus twinge. Sweet, slightly metallic citrus plastic flavour on top of a fizzy, thin palate. Finish has a lot more banana flavour and leaves a bit of an artificial, sticky taste on the tongue. What can I say – it is called “sweaty betty”…
