Man, I’ve been looking forward to this one for awhile, now. Glad it’s finally out. Their Sixth Glass is a helluva quad, in it’s own right. That reminds me, I need to put up a review of that. Anyway, here we go...
This looks brown at first. Hold it up to a light source though, at it is a beautiful cherry red color. Nice finger and a half of medium thickness head sits on top. Retention is pretty darn good and so is the lacing.
I can smell the bourbon here, but it only hints at it, it’s not overpowering. Nice vanilla and brown sugar notes. Cherries and other dark fruits. Nice sweet maltiness. Toffee scents. Hints of oak and a little spiciness.
Not nearly as sweet as it smells, and that’s a good thing. Good malty backbone with a spicy kick. Hints of bourbon flavor. Oak, vanilla and a nice level of smoke. Nice cherry tartness. Hints of brown sugar and toffee.
Medium to heavy thickness. Very creamy smooth. Flows down quite nicely.
Very drinkable now, but I think it will be even better in 6 months to a year. Although the 11.8% ABV is pretty well hidden, there is still a touch of heat here. I’d like to see that mellow out a wee bit more.
It is worth the wait. Another excellent entry in Boulevard’s Smokestack Series! hombrepalo (757), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 9, 2009 FoBAB tasting. Heard so much hype about this one in the past had to try it. Pours hazy dark amber, dark fruits, toffee, bourbon, wood, vanilla, little yeasty, slight roasty.
Didn’t wow me but was still a good beer. SoLan (1411), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 29, 2009 Courtesy Ty. Vinous tart notes from the cherries, a bit tannic. Age has really brought out the cherries. Nice strong, barrel aged Belgian. Medium/full body, well carbonated. Solid. Teege (76), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 29, 2009 750 ml thanks to Solan. Pours a kind of thin but vibrant amber. Hint of bourbon in the nose but that’s competing with a lot of wet dog and burnt hair. Some people say molasses; I say wet dog. Hey, it’s a free country. They flavor is whatever. I don’t get much bourbon in it at all. Just a lot of dark malts and stuff. Not a big fan, but I’ve never claimed to be a big fan of the quads. redlight (1457), Winter Park, Florida, USA Oct 29, 2009 thanks to Solan for sharing this one! Malty sweetness with some toffee and cherries on the nose. Pours a reddish amber with a thin white head. Caramelly malty sweetness with hints of cherries, hints of candied cherries, with some toffee notes in the flavor. kramer (2430), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 29, 2009 25 oz bottle. Pours a clear ruby brown body with a great frothy and foamy off-white head that lasted forever, leaving tons of lacing. Beautiful looking beer. he nose is lighter than expected, light caramel, and dark fruits mostly with very little bourbon. Some sweet notes like candi or brown sugar and a light woodiness as well. The flavor is rather sweet but pretty smooth up front, the bourbon doesn’t really hit till late in the finish. Lots of candied dark fruits and candi sugar, with fairly restrained alcohol taste. Very short finish for how big and thick this is. Fairly thick but not overly sticky or cloying. Moderate fizzy carbonation. A little warming on the finish. Pretty decent, but I couldn’t get overly excited about it. SuzyGreenberg (1324), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 15, 2009 750 ml bottle - pours clear, light brown with thin off-white head; bourbon, red wine, musky, vanilla, dark fruit and oak; thin bodied and almost syrupy; very sweet and boozy; enjoyable, but nearly as much as the base beer; overly sweet blaheath (16), Missouri, USA Oct 3, 2009 Updated: Oct 5, 2009Burnt amber in color with a 1/4" head. Aroma is dominated by oak, followed by cherries, vanilla and bourbon. Taste is medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation, heavy new oak, vanilla, cherry, cigar, mint, noticeable alcohol, and a semi-sweet/dry finish. Recommended.
