grant (753), Martinez, California, USA Dec 4, 2002 Updated: May 25, 2007 Very nice, complex beer. Tastes bitter and hoppy initially, followed by the coffee element, and the finish is bitter again with smatterings of chocolate. The carbonation is perfect and helps the flavor roll across your mouth. Excellent.
ADDENDUM: I recently had this on tap and it was AWFUL! I don’t want to change the rating because I had several great bottles, but if it happens again...RE-RE-RATE: I’m convinced the incident of the bad tap porter was a fluke. Every bottle I’ve had of this has been wonderful. The best porter I’ve had, and it’s my favorite style!
Goodgrief (1013), Middletown, Delaware, USA Aug 16, 2008 Dark brown, impressive pour with pillowy head and nice lacing. Strong roasted aroma. The flavor, however, is bitter, acidic and astringent. The caramel present didn’t go well with the other notes. Like an out of tune string on a guitar. It got slightly better as it warmed. Extremely dry...like biting on a piece of charred wood and having it crumble to ash. rkuhnel (1064), Eureka, California, USA Aug 13, 2008 From a 12 oz bottle this poured a cloudy brown that was almost black, with a mall tan head and light lacing. Nose of roasted malts, chocolate and fruit Mouthfeel is smooth and clean. Flavor are rich in strong on the chocolate with a nice bitter hoppy finish. fidelis83 (21), Clinton, Iowa, USA Aug 2, 2008 Pours very dark, slightly cloudy brown with a thin but long lasting head leaving decent lacing. Aroma of roast malt, mince meat and musty leaves. Flavor is much the same, roast, dry chocolate at first, a little bitter/ spicy hops in the middle. A nice sweet chocolate, dark caramel finish and a little bitter hop linger.
Overall a great porter for the money. djd07 (339), Houston, Texas, USA Aug 1, 2008 Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a medium frothy tan head that lasts awhile. The aroma is a sweet malt with raisin and coffee. Good sticky lacing on the glass. The taste is roasted malt, chocolate and a very sweet finish. Really enjoyed this one. A very good porter from Boulevard. WesKBob (145), Bethany, Oklahoma, USA Jul 29, 2008 Pours black with a very thick tan head with good retention. Aroma is light, with notes of coffee malt and mocha. Flavor is stronger, with roasted malts, toffee and just a bit of caramel sweetness. Slightly bitter coffee in a smooth finish. A nice beer.
