Neighbors for nearly twenty years, Boulevard Brewing Company and The Roasterie share a passion for making extraordinary beverages. In Coffee Ale, our two celebrated brewing traditions come together in a long-awaited collaboration. Ethiopian Sidamo from Africa’s Great Rift Valley has been carefully blended with rye, oats, and malted barley, and spiced with Perle and Styrian Golding hops. The delightfully fragrant beer presents a glowing, tawny-amber hue. The clean, crisp acidity of the air-roasted coffee mingles with malt on the palate, lingering faintly in a subtly sweet finish.

750 ml cork and caged bottle purchased at Metcalf Discount Liquors in Overland Park, Kansas. Bottled 2013-3 best before 2013-10. The pour is a hazed brown copper ruby with a three inch crackly light tan head. The aroma is soft roasted malt, nice dark chocolate element and a gentle earthiness. Doesn’t really jump out as a “coffee” nose, though it is quite pleasant. The taste picks up on roast coffee, bit of char grain, the soft gentle earthiness of the nose, sweet chocolate and caramel. The coffee character really comes out in the longish finish, along with some sharp bitterness. The palate is medium bodied, active bottle conditioned carbonation and the earthy, mineral coffee dry finish. Nice use of coffee in a beer.

750ml bottle. Clear deep amber with a long lasting, foamy beige head. Aroma of coffee, cocoa, malt and light berries. Flavor is robust coffee, light tartness, sweet malt and no alcohol taste. Medium body with a frothy mouth feel. This one is interesting, good coffee character, an odd tartness but hides the ABV very well.

Draft sample at Freshcraft. Pours hazy brown with a small tan head. Aroma of coffee, caramel, toffee, butterscotch, sweet malts and dough. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Tap @ Fresh Craft, Denver. Pours a medium cloudy, brown beer with a thin layer of off white head on top. Aroma is coffee, caramel, faint vanilla in there as well. Flavour is medium sweet, big coffee and caramel character in there. Lovely, silky smooth mouthfeel. Very nice!

Bottle at SBWF 2013. Coffee in beer leads your thougts to imperial stouts, this is something entierly eles. Some tartness but mainly rather sweet taste of coffee with sugar.

SBWF 2013. Hazy amber/brown beer with a nice beige head. Coffee aroma, quite fresh, cocoa, licorice, herbal, rye bread, some citrus. Coffee flavor, spicy, roasted, caramel, cocoa, herbal, some floral notes. A bit odd but definately not bad.

Poured a very dark murky brown with an off-white head. Aroma has lots of cocoa with espresso and rye and cereals. Very interesting aroma. Taste is sweet with chocolate and oatmeal. Coffee flavors are very good too. Not too acidic, mostly very smooth and malty. Finish has a slight touch of hops. Overall this is very good!

Bottled, batch 2013-4 (best by 10-2013). Very dark chestnutty red- brown, head is very large, light tan, and mostly lasting. Very rich, nutty roasted coffee aroma with dark cocoa and creamy lactose undertones. Coffee notes follow through into the taste - subtle bitterness, mild creamy sweetness and a little bit of mellow leather. Big, slightly green/very mildly roasted coffee bean flavors in the immediate aftertaste that wanes into toasted hazelnut and pecan nuttiness. Dusty, slightly dry finish. The alcohol is dangerously well hidden. A very nice example of a beer that highlights coffee using something other than a stout as its base, allowing primarily the roasted coffee, not the roasted malt, to come through. Certainly one of the best coffee beers on the market I’ve had.
