COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Collaboration #3 Stingo was brewed using traditional English ingredients. A variety of ale and specialty malts from Yorkshire are at the forefront; their pronounced roasty aroma and flavor contain hints of toffee, cocoa and bread crust. English hop varieties contribute subtle herbal, peppery qualities. The beer was brewed in batches; some was fermented on oak, some was fermented normally, and some was allowed to sour in the mash tun before being transferred to a fermenter. Boulevardís brewers, along with Dann and Martha Paquette of Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, then blended the batches until desired levels of wood and tartness were achieved for the final product. Aroma Roasted and caramelized malts, toffee, wood, cocoa, banana, almond, mocha, brown sugar, bread crust Malt Roast, burnt, toasty, bready, rich, toasted sweet caramel Hops Subtle herbal and peppery Balance Malt Body Medium; malty body offset by acidity

November 5, 2012 on tap at the bridge. Brown pour with nice head and lacing. Roasted malt, spice, caramel and toffee in aroma and taste. Thin to medium bodied, light carbonation and slight bitter finish.

Pours a kind of ugly brown with a thin white head. Aroma is sweet of dark fruits, and a crazy amount of pear. Tastes like pear too, but also a woody taste. Little tartness and some caramel. A guy outside is yelling about a raccoon and its really weird. This is a pretty good and unique beer.

Bottle. Nice dark brown pour with white head. Aroma is quite potent, lots of english malt, toffee, toast, grain, but also some slightly "sour" aromas, cherries, oak, raisins, plums. Taste is a hybrid of roasty ESB like flavors, with toffee and toasted bread and a sightly vinegary flavor. If they didnít mention they did this on purpose, I might have suggested this beer was infected. The acidity was good for the palate however which was rather light even though the taste was very strong. Strange, Strange beer.

On tap. Pours a clear light brown with a tan head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has notes of chocolate and light sweet grains with just a bit of underlying spice. Flavor is a bit thin with light sweet chocolate backed by a hint of roast and dark grains.

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2012 750 ml corked and caged bottle. Pours dark brown-amber with a large long-sustaining beige head that leaves decorative lacework. Aroma is roasty and consists of dark fruits, SweeTarts, toffee or caramel, booze. Taste is sweet and sour with a dry finish. Itís a little acidic with umami. I also taste spices (cinnamon?). This is a well-made and creative brew, so I give it props for that, but at the moment itís not doing much for me. Itís easier to admire than it is to drink. Addendum: any type of admiration I had for this beer in my initial review started to wane the more I sat with it. Banana and solvent notes started appearing, giving me a headache. What was initially a chore to drink became damn near impossible. Every category from Aroma on down to Overall was brought down. What was an admirable yet hard to drink 3.9 beer became a less desirable 3.3. Even with its many faults, though, there are still things to admire about it, so itís not a total loss.

Copper colored pour with an off-white head. A sweet caramel and toasted malt aroma up front. Some subtle floral and spicy hops, a light yeast note, and some mild fruit esters. Not bad, but not terribly good. The flavor is a bit bland. Some bread, toast, and a hint of toffee. Light hop flavor and minimal bitterness. A bit of water, maybe a touch of metal, and light fruit esters on the finish.

I had high hopes for this one, as itís a collaboration from two breweries I really like. Once I tried it, I just got the feeling they tried to do too much. The aroma is decent, with wood, smoke, roast, and nuts. The flavor starts with wood (which--letís face it--doesnít really taste that great), and brings in nuts and roast before finishing with peppery spice, coffee bitterness, a funky tartness, and alcohol. Individually those are fine, but together? Not so good. OK, but not worth seeking out.

On tap. Pours a deep brown with a thin tan head. It has a light aroma of malt, smoke, and caramel with the same profile in the flavor. It has a sweet aftertaste and a smooth mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Location: Bottle shared w/ jcos, and dbarnold, 10/21/12

Aroma: The nose is malty, with caramel, a little oak, some wood, nuts, and a roast
Appearance: The pour is a brownish-dark amber color with a beige head
Flavor: Tastes similar to the nose, on the malty side, minimal bitterness, and a touch metalic on the finish
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a soft feel/carbonation to it, and a malty, mildly metallic finish
Overall Impression: Overall, this one wasnít a favorite for me. I did feel like there were good components to it, and I am generally a fan of Boulevard beers (collaborations included) and Pretty Thingsí beers, but this one just felt a bit underwhelming as I was drinking it.

Decent, but Iím not a huge fan of the style. Flat and sort of sweet, with an oakiness and palate that didnít really work for me. Itís big and sweet, which is definitely the idea but the palate just didnít balance out to something I liked.
