3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from a 750 ml bottle. The aroma is banana, stone fruits, raisin, hot alcohol notes. The flavor is chocolate, toffee, fruity, tart, wine notes, very rich. This may have some brettanomyces. Very interesting, I enjoyed the rustic character of this.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a deep mahogany color with a nice two finger eggshell color foam. Aromas are complex with earthy woody dark fruit, malty and rustic with a touch of herbal sweetness. On the palate there is a lot of that complexity coming through with a nice malt backbone to reign in the flavors of chocolate, crusty bread, sweet toffee, pepper and a nice little underlying sour tartness that is subtle but really livens up the back end of this brew and cuts through the dark caramel sweetness.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pour on tap at Royal Hilltop, dark reddish brown pour with white head, aroma brought toffee, caramel, burnt sugars, some slight earth, biscuit, sour fruits, hints of nuts, touch of red ripe fruit as well. Taste is a mix of sweet fruit, caramel, burnt sugars, hints of earth, slight sour notes, some red fruit, finishing sweet, dry. Interesting.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Corked bottle and served in one of my Duvel snifters: Pours a deep reddish-brown with a fading off-white head and good lace. The aroma has notes of almond joy candy bar (almonds, chocolate, coconut) , oak chips, banana nut bread, slight raisin and plum, and a hint of treacle. The taste is malt forward but not overly sweet has there is a slight tartness and mild acidity for balance. Not much in the way of hops found in this brew, light peppery notes are discovered however. The mouth feel is smooth and dry but a bit on the dull side. Overall, I quite enjoyed this and it did exceed my expections. FAR BETTER than the Samuel Smith version. I would NOT recommend aging this beer however. Buy now, drink now.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 9/20
Nice use of dark roasts. Similar to many of the smokehouse beers that they are producing. Heavy on the roast at the front. Light berry fruit in the initial taste, hops towards the end more bitter then standard English style ales.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, light beige head, with some lacing, over a slightly hazy dark amber (SRM 18) body......nose is redolent of cereals, dried fruits including raisin, plum, lighter cherry, wood, banana, with hints of cocoa, hints of hazelnut.....taste is heavy cereal, cocoa, raisin, plum, coffee, finishing with light pepper, hints of bitterness.........mouth feel thick, alcohol warmth present, carbonation adds a spritz. This is a nicely complex well balanced beer. The malts dominate, but with some restraint, along with lovely contribution from the hops. This falls well within the description of an "English Barley Wine" under the BJCP style guidelines. It is a delicious beer. BJCP 8/3/15/4/7
