A - Pours a very dark and clear garnet with 3 fingers of beige head that creates a solid ceiling of bubbles. Some pretty nice lacing as well.
S - Roasted chocolate malt, espresso beans, raisins, roasted dates, light woodiness
T - Starts of with espresso, cocoa, roasted malts, toasted brown bread, a grape skin tartness clings to the top of the mouth and sides of the tongue. Some muted raisins, charred dates, and unripe cherries, some pine hops create a bitterness toward the dry finish.
M - Medium body, moderate stingy carbonation.
This drinks good but doesn’t have the deep layers of malt and that I was hoping for. It does have a stingy effect on the palate from the carbonation and the tartness. I think this needs to sit for a couple of years. I would drink this again but wouldn’t seek it out.

This took some traditional English ale characteristics and turned them on their ear. In my opinion, it made them better. The aroma was sweet and malty like caramel. The color was a cloudy brown, almost muddy, especially near the end of the bottle. The flavors were complex and blended. Very heavy maltiness with a souring effect at the back of the mouth. Medium-low carbonation. The sweetness found in most English ales was not there, which I liked. Woody and spicy flavors rounded this out. I also believe hops helped to balance this better.

750 ml bottle int tulip glass, bottled in 3/2012. Pours slightly hazy very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, apple, pear, caramel, toast, toffee, floral, pepper, oak, brown sugar, clove, light roast, light nuttiness, and toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and fruity yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, raisin, apple, pear, fig, toast, molasses, toffee, biscuit, floral, nuttiness, oak, light chocolate, light roast, and toasted earthiness. Lingering notes of light and dark fruits, caramel, toast, molasses, toffee, biscuit, light roast, light chocolate, nuttiness, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance and complexity of toasted malt and fruity ester flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick and creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent English strong ale. All around nice balance and complexity of malt and fruity ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

The nose starts with nutty - dark malts, biscuit, toast, toffee and herbal hops. The taste starts with rich brown and dark malts, a little biscuit and toasty brown malts. Next comes nutty caramel and toffee, The end has a candy sugar like sweetness with a decent herbal/grassy bitterness; as well as a boozy smack.
Overall it’s okay, but not great. It has the typical UK style malt/hop characteristics but it’s quite boozy tasting.

Brilliant copper color with lasting tan head. Toffee, spicy yeast, vanilla, pitfruit aromas. Medium body with average co2. Rich toffee, caramel flavors with spicy, lightly tart pit fruits---warming finish----good.
