COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Collaboration #3 Stingo was brewed using traditional English ingredients. A variety of ale and specialty malts from Yorkshire are at the forefront; their pronounced roasty aroma and flavor contain hints of toffee, cocoa and bread crust. English hop varieties contribute subtle herbal, peppery qualities. The beer was brewed in batches; some was fermented on oak, some was fermented normally, and some was allowed to sour in the mash tun before being transferred to a fermenter. Boulevard’s brewers, along with Dann and Martha Paquette of Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, then blended the batches until desired levels of wood and tartness were achieved for the final product. Aroma Roasted and caramelized malts, toffee, wood, cocoa, banana, almond, mocha, brown sugar, bread crust Malt Roast, burnt, toasty, bready, rich, toasted sweet caramel Hops Subtle herbal and peppery Balance Malt Body Medium; malty body offset by acidity

Bottle:   Deep dark caramel, moderate sudsy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Strong sweet dark breadiness, but not all that sweet.   A bit surprised.   Soft toffee/caramel start, but soon thereafter it seems a bit tart and sour.   Doesn’t seem to have that huge caramel/toffee breadiness, and more importantly all that biscuit like sweetness.   Its not any of that.   Apparently I am drinking this 3 months after the best by date!   Surprised to see it has turned around this much for such a strong brew.   Most other English Strong Ales seem to hold on much longer.   I guess this one needs a re-rate.   Shocked that its gone this far away from the style only given its three months past the suggested drink by date.   Damn...   Usually Boulevard brews don’t have this issue.   This one seems really really old, and really beyond anything I would call an English Strong Ale.   So many of these come around Christmas, but this one pales in comparison.   Definite re-rate is in order, in the event its redone.   I bought this only a few months ago (Spring 2013), but guessing its been on the shelf too long? Aroma is yeast, dark fruit, raisins/figs, malts and a decent hint of sweetness. The flavor is dark fruit, mild sweetness, toffee, coffee, malts and a tart and acidic finish.

I really enjoyed this one. Aromas of roasty malt and dried fruits. Flavor was more of the same, with a hint of tart at the end. This beer was at times slightly sweet, but finished dry. I did not notice any of the "sting", but I really enjoyed it never-the-less.

On tap at the Flying Saucer Garland Beerfeäst. Poured a clear deep brown with a frothy tan top. Complex flavors of bread, cocoa, toffee, oak, caramelized malts, some brown sugar, with a nice boozy finish. Medium carbonation, medium-think body. Delicious

750ml served in a snifter. Batch 2012-2 Best by 03-2013 A - Pours a very dark and clear garnet with 3 fingers of beige head that creates a solid ceiling of bubbles. Some pretty nice lacing as well. S - Roasted chocolate malt, espresso beans, raisins, roasted dates, light woodiness T - Starts of with espresso, cocoa, roasted malts, toasted brown bread, a grape skin tartness clings to the top of the mouth and sides of the tongue. Some muted raisins, charred dates, and unripe cherries, some pine hops create a bitterness toward the dry finish. M - Medium body, moderate stingy carbonation. This drinks good but doesn’t have the deep layers of malt and that I was hoping for. It does have a stingy effect on the palate from the carbonation and the tartness. I think this needs to sit for a couple of years. I would drink this again but wouldn’t seek it out. Serving type: bottle 11-04-2012

This took some traditional English ale characteristics and turned them on their ear. In my opinion, it made them better. The aroma was sweet and malty like caramel. The color was a cloudy brown, almost muddy, especially near the end of the bottle. The flavors were complex and blended. Very heavy maltiness with a souring effect at the back of the mouth. Medium-low carbonation. The sweetness found in most English ales was not there, which I liked. Woody and spicy flavors rounded this out. I also believe hops helped to balance this better.

750 ml bottle int tulip glass, bottled in 3/2012. Pours slightly hazy very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, apple, pear, caramel, toast, toffee, floral, pepper, oak, brown sugar, clove, light roast, light nuttiness, and toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and fruity yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, raisin, apple, pear, fig, toast, molasses, toffee, biscuit, floral, nuttiness, oak, light chocolate, light roast, and toasted earthiness. Lingering notes of light and dark fruits, caramel, toast, molasses, toffee, biscuit, light roast, light chocolate, nuttiness, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance and complexity of toasted malt and fruity ester flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick and creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent English strong ale. All around nice balance and complexity of malt and fruity ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

The nose starts with nutty - dark malts, biscuit, toast, toffee and herbal hops. The taste starts with rich brown and dark malts, a little biscuit and toasty brown malts. Next comes nutty caramel and toffee, The end has a candy sugar like sweetness with a decent herbal/grassy bitterness; as well as a boozy smack. Overall it’s okay, but not great. It has the typical UK style malt/hop characteristics but it’s quite boozy tasting.
