Collaboration #3 Stingo was brewed using traditional English ingredients. A variety of ale and specialty malts from Yorkshire are at the forefront; their pronounced roasty aroma and flavor contain hints of toffee, cocoa and bread crust. English hop varieties contribute subtle herbal, peppery qualities. The beer was brewed in batches; some was fermented on oak, some was fermented normally, and some was allowed to sour in the mash tun before being transferred to a fermenter. Boulevardís brewers, along with Dann and Martha Paquette of Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, then blended the batches until desired levels of wood and tartness were achieved for the final product. Aroma Roasted and caramelized malts, toffee, wood, cocoa, banana, almond, mocha, brown sugar, bread crust Malt Roast, burnt, toasty, bready, rich, toasted sweet caramel Hops Subtle herbal and peppery Balance Malt Body Medium; malty body offset by acidity

On tap at Red Monk. Hazelnuts. Kinda muddled this one is. Slight apple-y tartness. Over carbed. Astringent.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2013 Dark brown with beige head of foam. Nose of caramel, maple syrup. Taste dark fruits, coffee, spicey, with slight tart finish. Complex brew indeed.

Total Wine, Fairfax 750ml: Pours a brown with a beige head. Aroma is wood, caramel malt, fruit, chocolate, and pretzels. Taste is a bit of pretzel,. A healthy dosage of hops. A subtle undertone of chocolate. Loads of malts. Minor bitterness. Minor sweetness. I didnít get too much sourness out of this. Pleasant body. Not too much carbonation.

Bottle: pours clear dark amber, dense milky head that persists. Nose is brandy, nuts, sherry and prunes. Much of the same on the palate. Rather boozy with some oak. some raisin and dark fruits. Not enough nutty malt notes for my liking though I appreciate what the brewers were going for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 c&c from Wine & Cheese in Clayton, MO. Pours hazy, dark ruddy copper with a creamy/fizzy beige head. Aroma is somewhat roasted malt with a lot of fruit, treacle and pepper notes. Gets a little nutty as well. Full bodied, or close enough. Flavor is nutty (has that oilness too), chocolate, fruit, hint of coffee, oak astringency, herby, touch of pepper, maybe a little banana ester. There are some traces of sour. Itís kind of mouth drying. Pretty complex.

Bottle... Clear, dark, mahogany ale with a small, fat-bubbled, mushroom-colored head. Great retention. The nose is a swirl of toffee, toasted nuts, chocolate and vanilla with a hint of red wine. Full-bodied and lightly creamy with moderate carbonation. The flavor tilts only slightly toward the sweet side of balance, providing notes of chocolate, meat broth and herbal-rooty sarsaparilla tartness. Finishes tangy and acrid with a lengthy mocha aftertaste. Bottle generously shared by my good friend growler!

Bottle. Pours a deep burgundy color with a creamy tan head. Aroma is sweet and malty, very ESB like with plenty of bready and doughy notes. a touch of sharpness. Flavor is sweet and some caramel breadiness with some underlying sweetness that fades out with a Guinness-like very slight sharpness. Medium body and a soft carbonation.

750mL bottle, pours a deep dark opaque amber with a medium beige head. Aroma has quite a bit of heat, with English malts, caramel malts, dark fruits and booze. Flavour brings out yeasty notes upfront, English malts and some dark fruits following. Too high carbonation which obscures the complexity. Decent stuff, but quite flawed.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, Batch 2012-2, best by 03-2013. Served in a DFH Signature glass, the beer pours a dark brown color with some reddish tints. Thereís about an inch tan head that stays around for a while, and also a good amount of lacing. The aroma is sweet and fruity, it smells like dark fruit (raisins, plums, cherries), nuts, caramel, coffee, and some brown sugar. The brew tastes like sweet and tart dark fruit (cherries, raisins, plums, red grapes), caramel, brown sugar, molasses, nuts, oak, and some chocolate. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís creamy and has a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this beer, and Iím glad I got to try it. Definitely worth a try if you come across it.

Corked and caged 750 ml bottle poured into a Boulevard Smokestack series tulip glass. Pours a very dark brown capped with a two finger foamy cream colored head. Significant splotchy lacing present. The aroma of nutty toffee, hints of caramel some phenol alcohol and a touch of cocoa greets the nose. Opens with a hint of dark chocolate joined by almond, caramel, and finishes smooth with mild alcohol warmth cloaked in slightly dry and sweet caramel. A medium level of carbonation and medium smooth body. A solid brew and very enjoyable. One of the better collaborations Iíve enjoyed recently.
