mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Feb 11, 2009 750 mL bottle poured into shaker- poured slightly turbid copper orange color, thick and hearty tan head formed, bubbled away slowly, and laced very nicely along the sides of the glass. Aroma of pine, malt, and a note of peaches. Hits the mouth with a low-medium body, malt is present but wish it was just a touch more powerful, some light bitterness in the middle, finish is solid- a little dry, but it closes nicely. The label and brew reminds me of Bluegrass Homewrecker Double IPA that I had last summer. Ahh, those were the days... thefederalist (226), Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA Feb 7, 2009 Pours a mahogany reddish brown with an enormous rocky head with considerable staying power. The aroma is of sweet thick malt character and piney American hops. The flavor is on the sweet side, but the bitterness balances it well. I’d guess only about 75 IBU’s or so (as if that is not enough). The finish is dry, and although I feel like this beer is imperfect, there is something about it that makes me go back for another sip. The mouthfeel is unctuous. It is really quite good. I am more impressed with Boulevard every day. JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Feb 6, 2009 A very nice IPA. Nice pour with large sticky off-white head. Good lacing. Very well balanced and drinkable. Grapefruit, citrus, herbal hops, caramel malt, biscuits, sweet candy sugar, earthiness, and berries. Complex and the bitterness is certainly not the main focus of this beer. Tasty! hopheaven (83), Eureka, California, USA Feb 5, 2009 Updated: Apr 13, 2009A red beer with an effervescent and creamy off-white head that speaks well of the hops lurking beneath it. Smells strongly of spicy, citrusy hops, with maybe a hint of caramel malt as well. The flavor has moderate to low bitterness in relation to its explosive hoppiness. The best thing about this beer is that it lacks the cloying candy-like sugariness that most Imperial beers of this nature tend to have. It is simply the best IPA I’ve had to date. davidajensen (31), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Feb 2, 2009 I just didn’t like it. There was no balance to this beer. I like a hoppy beer but if you don’t balance the malt flavors then you end up with a beer like this. Lumpy (1802), Carrollton, Texas, USA Jan 31, 2009 Bottle. Dark ruby brown with a thick lasting foamy head. Nose-fruity, grapefruit, unsweet PNW hops, slight white spices and soap. Taste-medium bitter, cola, hay, not sticky, slight earth, slight strawberry, hint of molasses, very clean and mild. SpringsLicker (2041), Tennessee, USA Jan 25, 2009 Huge off-white head over a hazy orange body.
Malty citrus aroma.
Well balanced easy drinking IPA.
Somewhat average. crowderm (275), Recklinghausen, Germany Jan 24, 2009 Cloudy amber pour, off-white head. Very good looking brew. Sweet fruity aroma - mildly tropical. The taste picks up on these tropical fruit characteristics nicely, but also adds some spicy, peppery hop notes. Pretty good malt sweetness backing it all up. Full, chewy mouthfeel with good carbonation. Another solid beer from the smokestack series.
