NOT an IPA, but not a abdd beer. Very saison belgian genesequa-Y. malt & spice overwhelm the hops (although this was in a dipa lineup. one of these things is not like the other, one of these things does not belong. nonetheless a nice beer thanks matt mreusch

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2008 Poured a dark amber color with a medium sized head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of pine, orange peel, floral hops, resin, and caramel. Taste of citrus, pine resin, caramel, with a light bitterness in the finish.

Bottle. A nicerepresentation of the style with one exception is that its a tad on the sweet side. Nice balance of bitter hops and citrus orange/tangerine sweetness. Really nice.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 boboski (1095) - Alabama, USA - JAN 2, 2008
Pours a pretty, near-translucent amber. A mid-sized off-white head fades slowly, leaving thick gobbed lacing. The nose is heavily hoppy and fairly complex, a unique aroma for the style and pretty entrancing too. Peppery yeast is formidable. Heavy wet grass and sweet caramel dot the aromatic landscape, whilst baking bread notes turn tumultuous in the background. Alcohol is hefty. The flavor is moderately to highly bitter, sweetness high as well and driving the whole of the flavor to imperial levels easily. Resin and pine sap are strong. Maltiness is medium. Astringency is low, a testament to careful crafting. Finishes semi-sweet and quickly drying. Bitterness is heavy throughout the fading taste, forcing slight puckering. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, airy and quenching, with low-medium carbonation. Ease of drinkability is excellent.

Pours a reddish copper color, with a small, sparse head. Aroma is big time citrus, with some grass, apricot and what I perceive as mango. There is a slight malt component as well. The flavor is not aggressive or harsh, but surprisingly mellow. The hops linger on the finish. Nice.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BBB63 (5023) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - DEC 30, 2007
750ml corked bottle from Tom (mucho thanks) and the last of the four Smokestack series for me to try and the one that is far different from the others.
Sampled in my GI IPA tulip glass and the first pour is a clean sunset bronze hue with a initial frothy off-white head and outstanding lace upon the glass. The aroma has notes of resiny citric hops with pepper and clove esters, a bit grassy as well along with notes of caramel and biscuity malt, moderate mineral and phenols vapours noted.
The taste is quite fruity and moderately bitter as expected but hardly an enamel scraper as are some IIPA’s. Balanced slightly by sweet and grainy malts before tailing off towards a almost woody and hop spice finish. The mouth feel really works for the flavor profile, light and lively upfront with some bite and metallic sharpness on the finish.
All in all a very solid example of the genre with good attenuation and a fresh hop profile. MIKEY LIKEY! Tied with the Quad as my fav of the four Smokestack but all of them were very good and looking forward to the next batches!!

If you like hoppy.. this one is for you. Too much bite for me. Citrus and Malt are lost after the first finish... then it’s hopps forever.

Canadian Festivus. Foamy head on dark cloudy orange. Aroma of hops and citrus. Very drinkable and enjoyable. Lots of citrus thorought the sip and the glass. The alcohol is subtle. The malt is gentle and picks up in the middle and lifts the hops to the finish. 55 IBU seems restrained for 8.5% ABV.

750 ml bottle via trade with mreusch - Pours a hazy amber color with a one finger thick off white head. Light spotty lacing. Aroma is floral, citrus, and pine hops and fruity esters. Flavor is mostly hops and a light toasted malt background. Medium body. A good all-around IPA. Thanks Matt.
