timtheenchanta (70), Clemson, South Carolina, USA Jun 4, 2006 Small head that fades quickly. Slightly dark beer with lots of ruby shining through around the edges. Appearance leaves something to be desired.
Not much to the smell. Slight coffee. Not much else.
Ground coffee taste. A little bit of chocolate. The finish is definitely dry as promised and expected. Some maltiness in the palate but certainly lacking. ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA May 23, 2006 Pours dark brown/black with a small tan head. The aroma is roasted, smoke and chocolate. The flavor is slightly sweet, thin, some chocolate, molases. The mouthfeel is smooth, but light. jah noth (1015), Rochester, New York, USA May 19, 2006 Fairly thin pour but decently dark in appearance. Very little head. Burnt malt aroma. Chocolate and roasted malt flavor. Flavor profile is similar to Bully Porter though not near as good. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA May 17, 2006 Updated: Aug 2, 200712 oz bottle thanks to duane. Dark brown pour with very little head. Aromas were very slight. Maybe some detectable chocolate. Flavor was much better. Lots of roasted malts and still just a touch of chocolate. And another touch of mocha. Some hop bittering in the middle then more roastiness on the finish. Pretty good. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA May 11, 2006 12oz bottle. Pitch black with an appealing opaque reflection. Minimal tan head. aromas of sweet breads and coffee, but both vaguely. A little bit lighter, but not at all in a bad way. Rather fruity and lively, both as a good characteristic! Smokey and earthy. Coffee malts and bittersweet chocolate. Yet has a sticky dry side. Mouthfeel is lively and tart, but everything after that revolves around the cloying and bitterly dry. schwaiger (90), Laramie, Wyoming, USA May 4, 2006 12 oz bottle. Poured a truly opaque black-brown. A pintfull could secretly be subsituted for welding goggles without someone immediately knowing you’d made the switch. Except maybe that they’d get beer in their eyes and subsequently burn off their fingers with a cutting torch - but it’d be worth it for this friendly stout. A tan head diminished quickly after pouring. Thick leavings cling to your glass, an indication of this beer’s smooth and hearty consistency. Well-layered aromas of coffee, cola, and chocolate malts with a tiny bit of noticeable alcohol (though I couldn’t find an ABV anywhere on the bottle or the box). Minute carbonation and a clean, thick mouthfeel make for big gulping. The alcohol noticed in the aroma is still present in the taste, though not overpoweringly so. Top notes of old coffee, cola, and tenpenny nails. Base notes of nutty/smokey chocolate. Light bitterness and acidity make for a refreshing, dry finish. An instantly likeable dry stout that’s great with spicy Italian food or on its own. Or with four or five other bottles. PorterPounder (3132), Tallahassee, Florida, USA May 1, 2006 Old Chicago Pizza - Roseville, Mn. 12 oz bottle. Dark black pour, thickish mocha colored pour, decent lacing. Aroma has some day old coffee notes. Flavor has the same coffee essence, hints of smoke, touch of licorice. Good example of the dry stout style. Decently thick mouthfeel - some velvety smoothess - not a whole lot of carbonation. Good way to finish lunch. Saarlander (1577), Saarlouis, Germany Apr 13, 2006 I like this brew, probably for the wrong reasons, I don’t always want a stout that tastes overly chocolaty, I like this one because its more of a smoky brew, more of a porter flavor, but abit richer, very clean on the palate, a nice dark brew, but very easy drinking, very smooth, a beer that I would drink quite often if available in my area! Thanks to my pal Duane for this one!
