Commercial Description:
Boulevard Dry Stout is velvety black and perfectly opaque, and topped by a thick, creamy head. This very drinkable, delicate beer is a delightful harmony of smoky roasted flavors with a silky smooth finish. Now available in bottles.

Poured pitch black. Aroma - Roast malt. Burnt malt flavor with some bitterness. Very dry. Nothing special.

12 oz. stubby bottle. Pours mostly black, a half-inch light tan foam head. Nice smell with a bit of roastiness and noticeable flavoring hops over inviting malt smell. First taste impression is that it’s a little too highly carbonated for this style. Soda pop bubbles get in the way of what should be a smooth beer. Some brisk coffee notes can be found, but not easily. Smells better as I drink it and can get my nose into the glass. Leaves nice rings of lace around the sides. Some smokiness comes out a little further on, and a bit of orange peel. But considering this brewer’s wonder Bully! Porter, their stout is a bit disappointing. But it is bottle-conditioned; maybe this sample got a bit of over-eager yeast.

Pours tiger stripe black with a medium beige head that fades pretty slowly but leaves no lacing. Aroma is smokey roast malt, camamel malt, dark chocolate and some faint bitter hops. Flavor is smokey roast malts, a little coffee, and some floral hops, some sweet caramel malt, and a little nuttyness. Finish is somewhat dry and mineraly, a little bitter/citrus hops. Mouthfeel is a little on the thin side but fits the flavor profile pretty well.

12 oz bottle. Pours orange-ish black with sizeable beige head. The aroma is roasty with a good dose of cocoa, some planty hops, brown sugar, and something that strangely reminds me of sea salt. The flavor is weak coffee and earthy/planty hops. Assertive bitterness, especially toward the finish, with a bit of roasty sourness. A little on the watery side. There are a few chalky tones in there, too.

Slightly chalky, thin for a stout, not awful, but not really what I’m looking for in a stout. "Stout Lite".

Bottle. Opaque, used-motor-oil brown/black; thin ivory film of foam. Mild “poopy” brett, metallic, and nutty malt scents. Bittersweet black malt and tinny/citric flavor, with whiffs of old newspaper and buttery diacetyl. Charred brussel sprout aftertaste. Simultaneous impressions of thinness, scant creamyness, and oversharp carbonation. Tinny and grapefruity overall. Unimpressive.

Bottle pours nearly black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee. Taste is bitter and slightly malty. Simple flavors match with a simple palate.

Bottle from D&J Liquor in St. Louis, MO. BB 05/08/08. But it’s bottle conditioned, so that’s not likely critical. Poured nice and black with a good tan head. Aroma of dark roasted/toasted malt. Medium body with somewhat frothy carbonation. Flavor is dark toasted malt with some hints of smoke. More than hints. Might qualify as a rauchbier. Finish is about the same. It’s a good refreshing stout with a smokey bent.
