COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our ESB will fall along the more traditional lines of the style with a nice balance of English malt character with spicy/earthy English hops. Although referred to as ďa bitter,Ē ESBs arenít necessarily that bitter. You can think of them as a quaffable English pale ale. I talked with brewer Matt Hecke about the teamís intentions behind the ESB and hereís what he had to say: ďAs of late a lot of our newly released beers have been more hop forward or extreme in their own ways. We wanted to show that a traditional style ale can hang with the best of our beers. We specifically chose to make an ESB because it isnít very common, but still traditional in nature. Itís a good opportunity to showcase our knowledge of brewing past and present.Ē

Pours amber with a huge, fluffy white head. Aroma is tough to nail down but Iím getting some lemon and general fruitiness. Taste is mild bitterness up front, biscuit and bread notes. Really carbonated mouth feel, almost effervescent. Overall a tasty brew that I would have again.

Bottled. Persimmon in color with a straight white head that is very frosty and long lasting. Moderate grains (wheat, rye) in the nose with some subtle dried nectarine and cookie malts - clean but not overly pungent. Moderately bitter taste, a bit astringent and medicinal, with leafy hops and orange zest highlights. A bit of white pepper in the finish.

Bottle: Bubbly, bright orange-amber with a tall, fluffy beige head. Toffee/caramel malt, light fruit aroma. Taste is mild.....malty grains...very pleasant, light bittering. Nicely English-feeling.

Bottle. Toffee malt and light hay/pepper aroma. Golden yellow with moderate head. Sweet sugary toffee malt and mildly bitter herbal hay flavor. Not bad.

12oz bottle. Huh, an ESB that sort of tastes like an ESB from the UK. Bitter and tasty, clean golden malt body. A pretty great session beer. Not sticky or dark caramel like most. Pretty straightforward, easy going.

A decent ESB. Orangish gold, medium bodied, with a mild hay and sweet bread flavor.

12 oz. bottle from foppa78- thanks again, Mat! Pours a clear orange-gold with a finger of off-whtie head that leaves some thin lace streaks and settles unevenly. Aroma of grass, straw, biscuit, earth, and mild spice. Flavor of grass, leaves, biscuit, tea, and not much else. Not much flavor in total, actually, but some bitterness on the back end. Light-bodied, with modest carbonation and a thin, smooth, earthy mouthfeel. Not much to it, but drinks nice and easy.

Copper-amber with an off-white head. Aroma of toast, caramel, grass, and earth. Taste is toasty and lightly bitter. Light-medium bodied.

Malt with slight melonoidin and faint fruit. Orange with off white head. Taste of bright fruit followed by dry malt. A little oxidized.

12 oz bottle given to me by Boulevard guys at Surly, thanks so much! Pours a clear bronze orange with active carbonation rising from the base of the glass long after itís poured. Foamy white head fades to thick wisp across the meniscus and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel malt and light hop presence. Flavor is mild and malty, with a pleasant English ale hoppiness that is understated. Alcohol is well-masked, and this beer gains complexity as it warms. Medium bodied, mild carbonation, malty finish.

Flavorless brew. Bitter, tart, carb on the tongue is prominent. No real distinguishing features. A very sad brew by Boulevard.
