October 21, 2013 This week marks the first release in an exciting new series of beers from Boulevard Brewing Co. Foeder Projekt #1, a draft only wood aged sour beer, will show up in bars and restaurants in the Kansas City area. At just under 7% ABV, Foeder Projekt #1 is best described as a wood aged sour. The base beer spent six months in a foeder at our Smokestack Series 750 ml bottling facility.
The beer transported to the foeder was, to be quite frank, a fairly uninteresting beer at the time of transfer. We had brewed a golden colored sour ale with the intention of aging it in the foeder to be blended into a future Love Child beer, our award winning series of sour beers. As with all of our projects, we tasted the beer as it journeyed down the path to sour deliciousness. It was at one of these stops that we realized this beer was pretty damn awesome just as it was. We called a brewers meeting to taste other barrel aged projects and everyone fell in love with the beer from the foeder so we decided to pull off some of the beer and keg it by hand.

Tap at WTF 2. Pours a cloudy ruby with medium off white head that lasts. The aroma is strong funk, oak, cherry skin. Thin mouth, tart cherry, oak, funk, really nice.

Draft 10 oz pour at Special Brews. Pours a glowing reddish orange color with no head. Big sour fruit, winish aroma. Heavier body with a nice sour orange fruit and berry flavor. Lingering tart finish with a late hour of lemon. Has the make up of some of my favorite sours. Incredible stuff. Waiting for projekt #2 already.

Tap at sb. Pours a cloudy dark amber with a scant white head. Huge tart tangy nose, balsamic and berries and lemon and oak and tiny hints of barnyard. Creamy medium body with lively carb. All the aromatics come back around for the mid palate, washing out into a long tart finish.

I have been trying to chase down the top 5 of Blvd ratings for a while. To make it harder, Blvd decided to start making a lot more variety of beers since I moved away. This was one of the first that I was very disappointed to miss. Then Brouwer’s in Seattle has a Sour Fest and had this. I needed to be there. I showed up right after work and the line was up the street. I was pissed. I then came back at night. No line, awesome. Not much people inside. Beers kicked, none that I cared about - woooo!!!.
Ruby grapefruit color. Small ring of head. The barrel is strong in this one. Leafy wood. Moderate cherry jolly rancher sourness, not quiet acetic. Flavor is amazingly clean juice drying sour abating the negative acetic qualities. Just clear and pointed sourness. Real drying and grapefruit sour finish. Light body. I really enjoyed this, much more than I thought I would.

Pouring at EBF 2014. Pours a hazed amber with a thin yellow head. Raspberry funk and musk. Tart acid, raspberries. Funk, lemon, bright acidity. Tart with bold lingering acid on the finish. Lovely.

Hazy dark copper with no head. Sultry sour earthy malty nose with a bit of fruit and wood. Pleasantly sour flavor that isn’t too sharp but with a nice subtle pucker nonetheless. Nice fruitiness and earthy malty tones with some guava and passionfruit, some woody lactic notes, and some tangy citrus. And a tart bright cherry note in there as well. Lovely sour. Quite complex but very sippable.

I now of course can’t even remember where I had this on tap...but I remember being stoked about the light puckery hints at barnyard, bits of sour peachy fruits, and straw. Must’ve been in Seattle...

A reddish brown beer with a small white head. The aroma is tart fruit and yeast. The flavor is super tart, underripe berries and cherry, with wood and malt backing. Very sour, very delicious.

6oz pour at Smoke and Barrel. Pours a murky amber with some spitty cream colored head. Nose is musty, some cooked greens, some sour mash, some berry, some vinegar, mild funk. Flavor is very tart, berry, some wood pulp, grapefruit meat. Tart finish. Not bad, maybe a bit young.
