COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Boulevard’s Love Child Series of "wild" ales are barrel-aged with such boisterous cultures as Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces. These wayward offspring can prove so complex that we employ gauges on the label to convey the intensity of three key personality traits, Funk, Sour, and Fruit, presenting a picture of the ale at the time it was released. It will change as it ages, but don’t we all? Oak barrels were used to age the majority of beer used for Love Child No. 3—with beer aged from 16 months to nearly six years. Another portion of the beer spent 11 months in stainless tanks, souring on Lactobacillus. While very tart, the sourness is short-lived and the beer finishes dry with a trace of oak. Bottle from 02-2015 thanks to a trade with mr angrypirate06. Pours with a hazy medium hued red body and a large and mostly retentive off white head with good lace. Aromas are musty and funky with a noticeable acidity and a lightly acetic nose. Under ripe plums, tannins, oak, black cherries and some bourbon. Flavors are medium tart, bright and clean acidity with vibrant fruity notes of cherries, plums and dates. Nice tartness, medium funky notes, oak, light esters. You can feel the warmth, but any sort of alcohol taste is well hidden. Medium bodied, tart, prickly carbonation. Nice to drink. I feel like I might be underrating it a little bit.

The American wild ale movement just keeps getting more and more sophisticated. This one blends barnyard and sour flavors as masterfully as the best Belgian red/browns. Great use of different yeast strains as well as the technique of blending different barrels. Unusually high ABV for the style, but you would hardly know it.

Bottle courtesy of larsniclas. pours hazy brownish red with rather thin creamy reddish offwhite head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sour and slightly malty with dark bread, tart raspberries, moist buttery wood, leather, red wine vinegar, blackberries, toasted coconut and moist soil. Taste is sour, slightly fruity and slightly malty with dark bread, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, overripe gooseberries, raspberry balsamic vinegar, soup stock, charred wood, moist hay, orange zest and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is dry, tart, round and medium bodied. Finish is sour, slightly fruity and slightly malty with dark bread, raspberry balsamic vinegar, moist hay, lemon juice, bay leaves, prunes, raisins, charred wood, coconut milk and hints of buttered biscuits. Good but not perfect…

Really good. Aroma of sour fruit with a hint of bourbon. Caramel color with a hint of red. Watery palate bit still full and sharp on the tongue. Great blend of flavors that culminated into a sour bit of pleasure. Taste of fruits, mild grains and whiskey but all subtle and well blended. Hops were not a player here, which worked out fine. A must try if you can find one.
