Boulevard’s Love Child Series of "wild" ales are barrel-aged with such boisterous cultures as Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces. These wayward offspring can prove so complex that we employ gauges on the label to convey the intensity of three key personality traits, Funk, Sour, and Fruit, presenting a picture of the ale at the time it was released. It will change as it ages, but don’t we all?

Oak barrels were used to age the majority of beer used for Love Child No. 3—with beer aged from 16 months to nearly six years. Another portion of the beer spent 11 months in stainless tanks, souring on Lactobacillus. While very tart, the sourness is short-lived and the beer finishes dry with a trace of oak.

Bottle at home with friends. Pour is hazy Amber with a small white head and decent lacing. Lemony, green apples, some biscuit, bready, lightly spicy, and pears In the aroma. Big sour apples, lemon juice, oaky, light spice, pears, and acid with a huge sour finish. Medium body with high cabronation. Ok, but more sour than I prefer.

No retention and no lacing. Smells of sour berries, vanilla and oak. Tastes of sour fruits, vinegar, vanilla and oak. Real sour aftertaste that gets more sour tasting the longer you drink it.

2013 bottle I believe. Pours a murky dark orange color with a small film of off white head. The aroma has notes of tart red berries, big oaky vanilla, some sweet malts in there. Very vinous. Flavour goes along with notes of red berries, tart green apples, cherries, big oak barrel character, vanilla, bourbon, bit of marzipan, also here, very vinous, getting some maltiness aswell. Very round and complex flavour. Not a whole lot of carbonation, medium body, quite oily texture and a dry finish. Really nice stuff!

Pours a clear, red-brown glowing color, with a small, dense head. Smells of balsamic glue, topped by yogurt and peas. The aromas come well together, thanks to the wooden barrel, apple peel and a whiff of sour lemonade, together with a high acidity and sweeter honey. This promises to be a very sour beer. Has a well fitting medium carbonation with a slightly metallic touch to it, among a medium body. Tastes of an uncompromising bitterness, built out of funky bretts, old creamy cheese, glue, fermented milk and young apple rind. Its wooden, leathery malts build the balancing foundation of this beer, while they exhibit just enough balance to handle the tart onslaught. Its apple sourness matures during the finish, adding a ripe, sweeter fruitiness to them, while the brew remains its acidic tartness. While the beer is indeed utmost acidic and sour, it features a decent range of flavors, finishing with a well fitting malt sweetness. A straight forward sour, struggling with not becoming too one-dimensional, due to its dominant sourness, threatening to swallow all other flavors.
