3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BBB63 (5023) - La Porte, USA - NOV 18, 2011
Corked bottle and served in a St. Bernardus chalice: Slightly murky light brown/ deep amber with a small but mostly lasting head and okay lacework. The aroma has notes of plum and raisins, simple molasses (not black strap), banana bread, clove, cinnamon, black liquorice, caramel, and some tobacco and earthy esters. Light faded old herbal hops do pop in and out.
The taste is rich caramel malts with a hint of toast, aromatic, Special B and pils malts over a layer of dark and tropical fruits that finished with a very light handed anise and cinnamon bun finish. The lingering floweriness displays the coriander and heather aspects. a bit peppery as well. That said this seems a tad dumbed down, more Special B and chocolate malt next time.
The mouth feel is moderately bodied with very sprite prickly carbonation. I do wish it was a tad more oily, slick and firm on the tongue however. I also wished the spices were just a tad more noticeable but then better to be a bit underwhelming than to be overkill... It is like Chimay Rouge light with spices... yep that it what it is. I would like to see what this could do in rye whiskey barrel but would also say that this is not a bottle for the cellar.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 mensch (120) - Loveland, Colorado, USA - MAY 14, 2012
Reddish-brown color, dense tan head. Aromas are inviting: dark fruit - raisons & plums, bakings spices - cloves & coriander. The flavor follows through with more intense spice and sugary sweet malt. Very light bodied for the style. Semi-dry finish. Well hidden alcohol. A little off or missing something in the aftertaste. It might just be fermented out too much for a dubble.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 cards04 (298) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - MAY 8, 2012
UPDATED: MAY 9, 2012 Pours amber with sediment and off-white head. Smells like raisins, bananas, smoke, charred wood. Nice medium bodied brew. Some sweetness on the tongue with classic dubbel flavours of dark dried fruit. Finishes with a smoky, woody, and bitter aftertaste that I found rather unpleasant. Doesn’t complement any of the other great flavours going on.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 presario (4133) - Stampede City, Alberta, CANADA - APR 27, 2012
Bottle with a sticky cork. Decent head on brown-copper beer. Quiet light malt and spice scent. Flavour does not seem to have the hearviness or depth of Dubbels. Unusually spicy finish with the added spice. I don’t get a lot of banana character. Spiciness seems to keep growing along with my enjoyment. Didn’t even think about alcohol until the glass was empty.

Pours dark brown/orange with a small head. Aroma of caramel malts, candied sugar, Belgian yeast, and some funk. Flavour the same. Medium bodied. Not bad.
4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 SPDickerman (424) - Texas, USA - APR 10, 2012
Pours dark mahogany with a large tan head. Smells fruity, bready, hints of cinnamon and anise. Taste is spiced, cinnamon and clove, hints of anise, and a touch of banana. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and less than expected mouth-carbonation, Boulevard Nommo Dubbel finishes with a kick of cinnamon and clove.

750 ml corked and caged bottle poured a clear reddish amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of cola, plum, brown sugar, coriander anmd licorice. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of carmel, coriander, fruittiness, cinnamon and light brown sugar with a crisp lingering cinnamon finish. Actually kinda wierd for a Dubbel.

750 ml bottle from 2011. Pours a very opaque (unfiltered) brown. Aroma of coriander, nutmeg, molasses, cinnamon, raisin. Flavor is molasses, clover, ginger, cinnamon, coriander. The spice comes out up front with the molasses flavor coming through more heavily in the middle. I enjoy the stronger molasses flavor.

On tapo at Kellehers in Peoria. This was a good and sweet example of the style. Poured with a creamy cream head, a medium thick, amber-brown body. The aroma is light and bready. Notes of toasted caramel, candy sugar, light oak, malted grains, earth and herbals. It hides the abv well, as this was lighter than expected. Overall, this was pretty tasty.
