Nutcracker Ale is Boulevardís special offering for the holiday season. This hearty, warming brew is a classic winter ale, deep amber in color, with hints of molasses balanced by the "spiciness" of freshly harvested "wet" Chinook hops.

Solid cloudy amber/brown pour with a thin layer of offwhite head. Strong aroma of carmel and spruce pitch, some floral hops too, very smooth smelling. Average carbonation, tingly mouthfeel, finish a bit dry. Flavor of big malt, mostly carmel, pine and floral hops and a hint of cranberry or something. Good IPA thatís a bit in your face, hefty on both hops and malt, carmel and christmas-y holly flavors are unique and blend to smell and taste similar ot a fresh christmas tree.

P: A brown/ruby red effervescent body with lush tan micro bubble head. S: Holiday spices, soapy hops, molasses and rich roasted syrupy malt. Spiced rum and dark fruits followed by a bready base. T/M: Roasted caramel malts, sweet cherries, prunes, dates and a bitter floral and pine profile with a touch of citrus. Nutty with holiday spices that bring a warming holiday sensation to the palate. Heavy doses of malt but a nice hop bitterness to round it out. Body is medium-full and sticky with a gentle sting of carbonation. Finishes dry with lingering caramel and nuts. O: A great holiday warmer that really packs a flavorful punch. The alcohol is present but does kill the palate. Canít wait to go back to Oklahoma were I can drink this yearly. Cheers!

1/7/2014. On tap. Pours deep amber with a tan head. Spicy aromas with molasses, dark fruit and roasted malt. The spice leads the way, but this is a very good seasonal.

Reddish brown. Pine, malt, bread, nuts aroma. The taste brings a nice bitterness from the fresh hopping to complement minority sweet malts. Medium bodied. Nice take on a seasonal.

On tap at Ridgewood (Raleigh). Pours an opaque reddish/brown with just a hint of head. Mild aroma hinting of spice and hops. Taste is very mild, almost weak, but good. Spices are not the foreground flavor like most winter/xmas ales, with hops coming through pretty strongly. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Fresh hop seasonal beers are an awesome idea. Too many Holiday beers tend to center on unusual seasonings and other nontraditional ingredients. Nutcracker goes back to the basics by using hops and malts in an attempt to craft holiday flavors. The effort is very well done. This ale is spicy and clean. Happily, Boulevard makes a great holiday beer without selling out.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2013 12 oz bottle. Appearance: average sized reddish hue head, amber-red color, ok lacing. Aroma: heavy malt, coffee, dough, caramel, herbs, oatmeal, roasty, leather. Palate: medium body, average carbonation, sticky texture. Taste: relatively sweet and mildly sour moving quickly towards a bit of hoppiness and then back to a sweet finish that is relatively short lived. Overall, a very nice Christmas beer and a nice treat on Christmas Eve. Happy holidays!
