COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The French-speaking region of southern Belgium is the birthplace of saison, the love child of a centuries-old tradition of small rural "farmhouse" breweries, where native yeasts and time-honored recipes combined to produce some of the world’s most distinctive beers. As a tribute to this artisanal institution, we offer our own brisk, unruly Saison. Truly an artful balancing act, it is both rustic and subtle, robust yet effervescent, spicy and fruity.

Batch No. S0254: Lightly-bronzed yellow. Billowing rocky white foam produces ample lacework. Pure aromas of herbaceous and floral hops elegantly dabbed with Juicy Fruit gum, minerals, candied lemon zest, distant clove and peach, and airy phenols. Pale malt yields a light note of toasted dough. Faint scent of baked apples, as well. Fluffy and expansive carbonation. Beautifully rounded flavors showcase a vibrant lemony twang along with a sharp, polished, and well-defined fusion of grassy-, minty- and herbal-hop bitterness. Hops are equally clean as they are explosively flavorsome. Admirably finessed bubblegum overlays the slippery yeast-derived banana fruitiness, though the banana is thankfully merely a background note. Trace fermented wheat flabbiness does exude at the center, somewhat tainting the otherwise abundant crispness that defines this beer. Plentiful yeast-fueled subtleties, including fervid spice which mimics clove and black pepper coupled with a snappy phenolic and semi-astringent mineralic bite. Quite ripe with succulent notes of peach and melon complementing the pillowy Juicy Fruit core which tempers the spiciness as it films the palate. Malts steadily gain vivid crispness which yields a lemon pie effect as it dovetails with the herbal hops and lemony character. Exquisitely soft and clean finish features continued interplay between lemon zest, herbal hops, gum, spicy clove and delicate malt. Very Dupont-like with a plentitude of high-temperature fermentation characters. Skillfully integrated, as well as distinctly rustic and elegant.

750ml bottle. thanks to matt for this extra. drank side by side with the saison brett... golden yellow pilsner like pour, partially hazy, qith a thick fluffy white head... clean pineapple citrus aroma, extremely fruity in nature... sweet sessional pineapple and lemon notes. very clean with good carbonation and mouthfeel. a pretty well made saison in my book but pales slightlyl to the brett version which seems on par with most.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2009 Pale murky golden-yellow in colour with a thin lingering white head, good lace. The aroma is lightly spiced, some citrus, yeast, lightly bitter. The flavour is of lemon citrus, herbal, light spice, wheaty, some funk. Bitter mouthfeel, medium/light body, high carbonation. Finishes long with some spice and lemons.

This was pretty good but seemed to lose some direction compared to the 3 Hopfenstark Saisions I just had.

Bottle at Mondial 2008, Montreal, Quebec.
Sampled on May 30, 2008.

Hazy golden pour with a thin head and some floating yeast particles. The aroma is nice and fruity with hints of spice, pepper. The flavor is light sweet bready malts combined with nice corriander, citrus, spice, and some floral/peppery hops in the finish. Nice drinking, very sessionable and well done.
