COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The French-speaking region of southern Belgium is the birthplace of saison, the love child of a centuries-old tradition of small rural "farmhouse" breweries, where native yeasts and time-honored recipes combined to produce some of the world’s most distinctive beers. As a tribute to this artisanal institution, we offer our own brisk, unruly Saison. Truly an artful balancing act, it is both rustic and subtle, robust yet effervescent, spicy and fruity.

750 mL bottle served in tulip- my eyes just did a double take- RETIRED?!?! Just picked this up at a firesale from a store going out of business (Grapevine), let’s see how this goes. Poured a very slightly hazy semi transparent dulled copper/straw color, low carbonation, one finger foamy and bubbly white head formed and lasted for several minutes as I attended to other things, moderate lacing. Aroma of earth, spices, yeast, and some definate farmhouse in the background. Hits the mouth with a clean medium body, malt is light but can be found, effortless wave of of spices (peppercorn with basil and citrus in the background) come in the middle, finish is very dry- and I’m having some water with this. Extremely impressed by this, because I don’t care much for the style, but I’m getting the rest (over 12 bottles yesterday) tommorrow from the firesale!!!

Bottle from Friar Tuck’s in Bloomington. Pours a very nice gold, mostly clear with a huge rocky white head that sticks to the sides. Nose is great with citrus notes, earthy yeast notes, spicy continental hops and clean malt. Fantastic nose. On taste, it’s a touch metallic at first, then a nice tart note with balancing, brilliant hops. Great yeasty spiciness. Absolutely fantastic and wish they’d stick with this one over Tank 7.

When I heard the Saison was being retired a few months ago, I ran out and bought a bottle. Back then, it was about 30 degrees outside. Today is a payday and it’s 93, so I figured what better time to try Saison next to its replacement, Tank 7? Saison has a great aroma, very fruity (banana) and yeasty with loads of spices. The appearance is also right in line with the style, clear gold with a big foamy white head and loads of carbonation. Flavor brings back the fruit from the aroma, but with a little soap (???) and lots of green grassy notes. Crisp and clean, with just a bit of muddy flavor at the tail end.

Lightly hazy yellowish color with a nice white head. Aroma startsout with some lemon, earthy notes, yeast and some interesting peppery spice notes. Flavor is a bit dry with lemons, pepper, woody tones, earth, and a lively carbonation that really makes this a nice beer. Too bad this one is retired...its delicious.

I’m not a huge fan of saisons, but this one was pretty good. Aroma was mild, touch of spices, relatively smooth. Flavor has touches of spices, with a hint of citrus and malts.

A- Body is very hazy nearly opaque straw yellow color. Pours with a thick approximately 2 finger, foamy white head. Cloudiness is very thick and uniform. S- Floral hops come through first followed by some pepperry spice as well as a hint of funk and bready sweetness. T- Flavor is much lighter than the smell. Soft floral hops are the highlight with a hint of peppery spice and a bit of bready yeast sweetness in the background. The finish is dry as the floral hops make themselves known and become a bit bitter (bit not bitter) making an abrupt end to the flavor. A very low residual bitterness lingers. The overall character of the flavor is soft and mellow. P- Well carbonated and a light mouthfeel that is a balance of dry and bready. O- This is a good saison that Boulevard has put together. Its light, soft, and a bit dry. Drinkability is good due to the unnoticeable ABV and the light character of the beer. Its a pretty typical example of a good saison with nothing that stands out a lot. I have the Saison-Brett in my cellar and can’t wait to try it! Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-04-2009 21:11:18
