Situated at opposite ends of the California Trail, pioneering breweries Sierra Nevada and Boulevard have embarked upon a journey into the unknown, to a land where adventures in brewing and flavor await. Terra Incognita is, fittingly, an earthy beer, celebrating the unique terroir of the two locations. Beginning with Sierra Nevada’s estate-grown pale malt, and combined with amber malt, wheat, and malted wheat, it is then assertively hopped with Bravo and Styrian Goldings, dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings, and finally barrel aged with Brettanomyces in Missouri oak.
Originally brewed at Boulevard and released exclusively on draft at SAVOR Fest 2012. Batch 2 was brewed at Boulevard and re-released to the general public in bottles on 6-18-13.

I hung on to this bad boy way too long. The souring agent in this beer is very understated. Elegant, perhaps. The oak provides a toffee/vanilla accent that enriches the beer. Hops are strong but not overpowering. Grapefruit citrus, grass. A success.

Dark brown with a lot of carbonation and a thick slow fading pillowy head. Nose of bourbon, some vanilla, wet oak. Bitter dark roast malts and tart finish. Don’t think this is what it was supposed to be...

dark brown color with a decent head; aroma is rather complex - mostly dark fruit and wine; complex, earthy flavor: dark fruit and caramel malts with notes of red wine and oak and maybe just hints of bourbon; well balanced; bitter, fruity finish

Dark brown maybe some red in there. Tastes of red wine, cherry, dark fruit, very earthy hops, a little spice, darker malts and a little bread crust. Variety of hop flavors, citrus, earth, pine. Medium body. Very refreshing brew and very aromatic.

Aroma of bourbon and alcohol, pours a dark brown with a short tan head. Phenolic slightly sour taste of spoiled fruit. Medium body with a sour finish.

Sierra Nevada-Boulevard Terra Incognita 3 has a thin, beige head, a turbid, dark brown (think of prune juice) appearance, and little-to-no lacing left behind. The aroma is strong and bold- white wine, vanilla, sugar, brown bread, dark fruits, brown bread, and coconut. Taste is of all those elements, with shades of coffee, baker’s chocolate, bread crust, and shaved coconut. Bitterness is fairly low. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Sierra Nevada-Boulevard Terra Incognita 3 finishes on the dry side and surprisingly drinkable. RJT

Bottle, shared with Parksy, Grippitis, JJ. Muddy brown with a lively beige head. Heavy lactic-sourness aroma, a bit musty, underlying tart fruits. Flavours of raisins, cherries, yohurty sourness, seedy bitter finish. Yum!

Pours brown with not much of a nose. Nutty taste - reminds me of a brown ale - with a slightly more complex finish of slight bourbon. Given how much I like Sierra Nevada, this one is a little disappointing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
