COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Situated at opposite ends of the California Trail, pioneering breweries Sierra Nevada and Boulevard have embarked upon a journey into the unknown, to a land where adventures in brewing and flavor await. Terra Incognita is, fittingly, an earthy beer, celebrating the unique terroir of the two locations. Beginning with Sierra Nevada’s estate-grown pale malt, and combined with amber malt, wheat, and malted wheat, it is then assertively hopped with Bravo and Styrian Goldings, dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings, and finally barrel aged with Brettanomyces in Missouri oak.
Originally brewed for and released exclusively at SAVOR Fest 2012. Re-released to the general public on 6-18-13.

750 c&c from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with a 5 finger foamy/frothy tan head. Aroma (through lots of head) is sour and dark. Med + body. Flavor is dark malt, wood and some seriously sour fruit. This is not vinegar sour. It’s dark fruit bretty. No cherry here. Apparently no fruit of any kind here, but I guess it’s the Goldings. When the foam is gone the aroma is quite earthy/sour, and the flavor generates a hint of chocolate - but it finishes earthy/sour. Mouth fatigue means not so sour as the start, but sour. This is a rather elegant ale, and if popular wines were earthy, this would be a fitting alternative. Ain’t the way of the world. tho.

Pours deep brown with very tall off-white to light tan head. Aroma is slightly vinous, some nuts, earth, cereal, fairly mellow. Taste is somewhat boozy, very mildly sour, light barrel notes. Lingering finish. Body is medium with soft carbonation.

Funky brew, some sour character. A big head. Decent drinkability. Not very complex wild ale.

This pours a dark brown color with a huge, foamy, light brown head. The aroma is very yeast as expected based on the pour. The taste is smooth, mellow, and just a touch of whiskey flavor that is no where near as bold as the bourbon barreled beers. This is an interesting yet simple brew that delivers an unique take on barrel aging.

Bottle. Pours nearly black with lots of fluffy off-white head. Aroma is whiskey barrels, very very mild tartness. Creamy mouthfeel, syrupy and sticky. No tartness, very malty.

Interesting flavors - smoky, tobacco, with a very dry finish and solid hop bite. I didn’t think it was a sour while drinking it - the brett influence is very faint in the nose mostly. Overall very good and unique. It’s a sour for hopheads - what else would you expect Sierra Nevada?

Bottle shared during RBWG GT. Poureda a medium density amber with a large bubbly light beige head. Aroma of pineapple, toast, citrus, grains, berries and light Brett. The body is overloaded with very strong carbonation and a dry finish. Flavor turns more medicinal than Bretty. Notes of dark toast, light chocolate, rye bread, citrus. Meh not for me.

My Bottom Line:
Quite dry and effervescent, this brew’s wild fruitiness is ably accompanied by vanilla, hazelnuts and roastiness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the dark brown.
-The fruitiness is redolent of dried dates and figs.
-This is a grain bill which is not common for wild brews. Kudos to them for making it work so well.
-Wooden barrel allusions seem to create alcohol warmth.
-HIgh effervescence makes this intense flavor profile rather easy to enjoy.

Bottle.
