Situated at opposite ends of the California Trail, pioneering breweries Sierra Nevada and Boulevard have embarked upon a journey into the unknown, to a land where adventures in brewing and flavor await. Terra Incognita is, fittingly, an earthy beer, celebrating the unique terroir of the two locations. Beginning with Sierra Nevada’s estate-grown pale malt, and combined with amber malt, wheat, and malted wheat, it is then assertively hopped with Bravo and Styrian Goldings, dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings, and finally barrel aged with Brettanomyces in Missouri oak.
Originally brewed at Boulevard and released exclusively on draft at SAVOR Fest 2012. Batch 2 was brewed at Boulevard and re-released to the general public in bottles on 6-18-13.

Pour is a dark brown/ruby color with a big fluffy light brown head. Slightly bretty nose, nice oaky note with a touch of bourbon, big caramel notes, sour cherries and dark fruits, and a nice wet grass funkiness. Wow, really really earthy taste, up front there its a quick tart cherries and citrus with some brett funk, some huge oaky notes and a touch of caramel in the mid palate, then finishes with a very smoky, earthy tobacco note quite strongly. Not sure what to think of this, the smokiness was a little strange I thought, and pairs wierdly with some of the other flavors. I’ll have to let this warm up to see what happens.

Pours a deep dark brown with a crazy thick head, not even a vigorous pour and chilled more than it should have been! Everything is complex, aroma has peppery spiciness and pecan pie wrapped in a bready envelope. Flavor is similar, piling on layers of vanilla leather caramel and cola (perhaps an effect of the carbonation), just a bit of funk. Semi-dry and almost salty. Good beer.

Got in 11/2014. Aged at 55 degrees until 6/4/2015. Pours dark with light lacy head. Lighter carbonation. Nice light fruit with some biscuit flavor. Some raisin and wheat flavors. The hint of bourbon and wine barrel notes makes it a really nice finish. Wish I had more than one bottle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
